Well, I acquired a SP101 from a coworker for $300. It is the 2 1/4" in .357 and has the ugly black factory stocks on it. I'd rate the condition of the gun as "very good", showing little wear other than a few small carry scratches.

The first two things I noticed about the piece is the weight and stout construction. It feels larger than it is and points very well (more on that in a bit). The double action pull is not as smooth as some, but allows for very consistant staging for accurate shots. Single action is nice. I don't think I will mess with the trigger at all, I am very happy with it as is.

I found the gun to have sharp edges, particurally on the back of the trigger, back of the cylinder, and the hammer. Some light work with a emery board and a Dremel took care of this in a jiff.

Range time. First I ran about 75 .38 125g reloads through it. VERY pleasant to shoot, and very quick recovery time! Accuracy was outstanding, at 15 yards I put 4 out of 5 almost touching on one group from DA standing. POA was about 4" low at 25 yards with these rounds.

Moving up to the 3-7 yard with .38 loads, I found point shooting to be very very natural in this gun, much like point shooting with a single action pistol. At 5 yards I could point shoot 5 rounds VERY quickly and keep them all center mass in the IDPA target.

I shot 10 rounds of some old 180g .357 black talons through it as well, again from 25 yards. Grouping was very good, this time POI was about 2" high.

As for carry, this gun feels much bigger than my M&P 340. That being said, I believe pocket carry will be OK in my 511 pants. OWB carry is somewhat inhibited by the longer grips.

I am very pleased with this gun and anticipate using it for summer carry loaded with 135g Gold Dot Short Barrel rounds. I plan also to work up some hotter 180g lead round for woods carry.

I have a Galco top snap holster on order and plan to soon put a set of the more compact crimson trace grips on. Overall, I REALLY like this little beast!

I don't understand why the grips would keep you from carrying owb.

If they are the factory ones, they are relatively stubby (but thick) things.
I put the Hogue Monogrip on my SP101 about a week after buying the gun, and I never went back to the factory grips. Might be worth trying out.

Glad you're enjoying it. It seems just about everybody who shoots one loves it. Welcome to the SP101 family!

Jmortimer- The recoil was stout, but not all that bad for my tastes. I am used to shooting the airweight smith though and have put quite a few .357 loads through that little gun.

I got this with the intent of using it for CC, but after I fired a hot .357 Mag round through it without my hearing protection turned once I was almost totally deaf and disoriented for about 5-10 seconds. I couldn't imagine firing one in self defense, I doubt I could make an accurate follow up shot.

Is it just me or does anyone else have this problem? This gun is extremely loud!

I have exactly the gun you purchased and have nothing but good to say about it. The crimson trace grips I do not have, but would love to. With those grips I am guessing you will have one super weapon. Congratulations.

NelsErik,

It's not just you and it's not just the caliber. A 9mm will also be pretty loud when firing indoors in a SD situation... just about any caliber will be loud indoors. But yes, the .357 is loud
