Spartan Armor Systems 3610 GL lightweight level III+ composite plate versus 130 gr .270 Win at 2,900 fps fired from Rem 700. Please note this plate is not rated nor intended for this threat.
Load details: 130 gr Sierra Game King over 54 gr of IMR 4831. The Highcom 3S9 stopped this load, but with extreme back face deformation. This plate is even lighter than the 3S9. Care to make a prediction?

I've seen several of these gun vs body armor/steel plate posts and have never clicked on any. My curiosity finally got the best of me and I have to ask what the intent is? Is it to show that a particular piece of armor will stop a certain round or is to show what you can use to penetrate said armor?

Yes. Both. NIJ rated level III armor like the armor used in this test is only rated to protect against 7.62x51mm M80 FMJ at 2,780 fps. Heavier or faster or differently constructed bullets may perforate the armor, or as seen in this test, may exceed the allowable back face signature. In short, a given NIJ rating only tells us that armor will stop the specific projectiles at the specific velocities it is rated for. Knowing the capabilities of armor and ammunition allows the armed citizen to be more prepared. It's also fun to shoot stuff and watch things get shot and talk about shooting stuff. That's why we are members of a gun forum, after all.
