What's the difference between Speer Gold Dot 124gr 9mm LE(law enforcement) and regular 124gr 9mm? Both JHP's..One comes in box of 20,and the LE comes in box of 50 ...Anyone know?

the cost per round...to you...is higher for the 20 round boxes

it wouldn't make and sense to package LE ammo in 20 round boxes,it just makes the math more complicated when they pack them for the multiple thousand of round orders.

if 20 round boxes were issued to officers, who minimally carry 15 round mags, the one in the gun (16rds) and the two spares (15rds each) comes to 46 rounds...that would mean each officer would have to be issued 2 boxes + 6 rounds...for a greater waste of packaging

You save money buying the 50 round box instead, that's it. It's all I buy these days. The 20 round boxes are for chumps.

Price per round... The boxes that state "law enforcement" were sold without Federal Excise Tax originally.

Most of the time the "law enforcement" boxes are a number of years old and were surplused because of age or traded in on other ammo.

The 20 round boxes are for chumps.

Not sure about that. I have a box of 50 count 124+P GD, and a 20 count box. The bullet cavities have definite differences in their design. The 50 Count boxes are old ammo, and use older bullet versions.

I find it hard to believe that the only 50 round boxes sold to civilians are old surplus. I'm going to look into this and find out.

I've been told that is the way the Winchester does it. They lift the "no civilian" rule from time to time to clear out the old stock. Then they reinstate the restriction.

I can not say that is 100% true. It is just what I've heard from a LGS employee.

Alright this is what I recently asked Speer:

"I have heard that the 50 round boxes of speer gold dot handgun ammo commonly sold (in my case the gold dot 9mm 124 grain jacketed hollowpoints)are all old police surplus. Is this true, or are they in fact
newly manufactured ammunition like the 20 round boxes?"

To which they replied:

"Speer sells our premium Gold Dot hollow point ammunition in two
packaging configurations.

50 count boxes are labeled 'LE Duty' ammunition, the 20 count boxes are
sold as Speer 'Personal Protection' ammunition.

The LE (50 count) boxes are typically sold to Law Enforcement
distributors, but it is not entirely impossible to find them from other
retail sources.

In order to tell you the age of any product I would have to have the lot
numbers from the box. Our lot number look something like "B24Q12" or
similar."

It's not really a definitive answer, but I guess I'm getting somewhere. I'm going to let the person know the lot numbers then see what's up.

The ammo is the same.

The 50 round boxes are cheaper like anything else is when sold in larger quantities. Some gun stores restrict the sale (at least until they have too much on hand and suddenly, miraculously, they become okay for sale to civilians).

Even if it were slightly older design ammo in the one size or the other (and it isn't), who cares?
I doubt the terminal performance of Speer's January 2010 ammo is substantially different from their August 2010 model.
