I've been told Speer Gold Dot LE (law enforcement) is different and not as good as the regular Gold dot for SD...I've heard of feed problems with the LE in the same guns using the regular JHP's with no problems...Any info on this?

our Department has been using Speer Gold Dot Law Enforcement for more than 8 years in 230GR .45ACP, 165GR .40 S&W, 124GR 9MM and 125GR .357SiG without issue...

Source of this info? Link? Why not call Speer?. I've never heard this before. I use GD LE in my Glock and Kimber and never had a problem

I use the Lawman ammo for the range with no issues either

I highly doubt this is the case. I highly doubt they'd sell ammo to LEO's that they thought had was less reliable then what got sold to the public.

I worked at a shop that sold both 20rd Marked "Personal Protection" and 50rd boxes marked "Speer LE DUTY Ammunition". We sold the 9/357sig/40 in 50rd boxes marked LE and the .45's were in 20rd boxes. I don't know why we didn't carry all 20rd or all 50rd but i shot a lot of boxes of both and never noticed any difference in quality/feeding/ejecting.

In my opinion, Gold Dots are the best out there. Ive done a lot of ballistics testing of my own with typical every day objects and the Gold Dots have always been just crazy reliable in expansion with Corbon DPX right by its size. If i could get DPX in 50rd boxes i might use that as my defense ammo but since i like to practice with what i carry/trust, the 50rd boxes make it more economical.

The only difference is in the box sizes, there are a couple of loads that I think, not 100%, only come in the personal protection boxes, but I'm not sure on that.

Different how?
Reliability?
Velocity?
Terminal ballistics?
Expansion?

I suspect that the only difference is packaging quality and possibly less (inconsequential) cosmetic blemished on the "personal protection" labeled stuff.

If you really want to know, contact brassfetcher and have some serious testing done with both, or at least do some empirical testing yourself. Even if there was a minor difference in bullet design (and I don't think there is) either version is a premium hollow-point design made by Speer, and either will get the job done just fine, differences would be negligible.

If you're chasing the "perfect boolit" just give it up, your skills are vastly more important than the choice you make among the modern-design expanding ammunition.

Also, I'm going to continue to buy the 50x boxes whenever possible, $1/round ammo in a pretty package of 20 or 25 is for chumps ... For the love of FSM, if I buy a 25-round box and load up my carry magazines and the wife's with new ammo someone is getting shorted (hell, just her loadout is 13+1 with 16 in the reload for 30 rounds ... small boxes are seriously not useful even if you don't test your ammo, and we do)

That is kind'a like the famous 9mm secretive "Secret Service Load"; which in
all honesty appears to be nothing more than a 124 grain +P Federal Hydra-
Shok. I have tried the SS load, as well as the 124 grain +P civilian load; and
I can't tell a big difference, as both where very accurate when fired from my
West German SIG-SAUER P228, one of my S&W 39-2's, and my Kahr CW-9.
All testing completed without a hitch~! :scrutiny:  ;)
