I was looking in to the speer hot core in .284 SP bullet in the 7MM-08
any pro or cons on speer bullets?
I would like to here from guys who load the BTSP bullet in this same cal. and how it will perform on whitetails under 100 yard shot?
I know the Boat tail bullet has the larger B.C. and less drag but will it work at distance under 100 yard shots
130-139 grain

For shots under 100yds you want flat based bullets ideally. The jacket is much thicker in the rear of the bullet so jacket seperation is minimized. I prefer Sierra Gamekings to the Hot-Cor. A nice bullet for shots inside 1-- is Hornady 154gr. Roundnose in 7mm. I call my load "Thors Hammer". It's devastating.

I used the hornady165 SP bullet for the last 40 years plus in my 30-06 and never had a deer take more then a few steps .I just like a change and see how other bullets will perform had some excellent results last year with the Remington SP 165 grain seem they shoot as well as the hornady but there prices also increased

Years ago I loaded some Speer Hot Cores in a 7mm Rem Mag. At the time I loaded them hot, a top charge of H870. They were accurate in the rifle with that load, but were moving way too fast at a 100 yards. I shot a doe at about 100 yards and it put a hole in her that you could have passed a coke can through without touching tissue.

Needless to say I backed off of the load.

Its a good bullet, reasonably accurate and if you match your load to conditions, they perform well. In a 7-08 they should be in the right velocity range not to have the upset failure mine had at the 100 yards.

Over the years, however, I have tended to settle on Sierra Gamekings and Nosler Ballistic Tips, but because I am generally hunting where the shot distances are a bit further out than 100 yards.
