Spent Cartridges flying over 3yds

baby eagles i have had 40 and 45 and a EAA witness in 10mm would toss them 30+ feet,
would hit someone around lane 10 and im on lane 3

I love AK's. They're a lot more accurate than haters make them out to be, very reliable, and very fun. One HUGE thing I like about them is the integrated optics hardpoint that most of them have. That side mount is just the perfect accessory mounting solution, and it's precise enough that, with a proper lever-lock mount, it maintains zero even after the mount is removed and reinstalled. Their ease of field stripping and cleaning is also great. All in all, they're just fun guns.

I had a 188-series Ruger mini-14 Ranch Rifle that would throw brass 15 to 25 yards (I never actually measured). I joked that it fired in two directions at once, and if you were clearing a structure, you could clear ahead and to your right at the same time.

cause of death: head severed by an HK91 shell casing.

My Sig rifle throws them about 20-25 feet in front of me, after denting up the brass.

OTOH my FN49 is quite good it makes a nice little pile about 6ft to my 2 o'clock.:D

My SKS has thrown spent cases 7 yds in front of me at 2 o'clock, it was hitting the paper target the shooter had up in the next lane over.

My witness 10mm damn near launches them into orbit. I usually spend 3-4 times as much time look for the brass as I do shooting the gun.

My FAL has a tune-able gas system; for those of you unfamiliar w/ this system, it basically allows the user to set case ejection to Stun, Maim, or Kill.

My SAR 1 throws empties all over Hells Half- Acre but as someone else mentioned, when I am at the range, I shoot from the extreme right of the firing line.

AK's typically tear up the casings when they eject them. It doesn't make financial sense to buy more expensive brass-cased ammo for an AK when only around 20% of the casings are salvageable.

I easilly recover more than 90% of the brass fired in my converted x39 Saiga, and have yet to have a case that couldn't be reloaded.

They all have a little ding in the side that is mostly removed by the sizing die. And the little scratch that's left is a convenient way to keep track of how many times the case has been fired. ;)

Putting dip-it on the bolt carrier handle can also help.

The real problem is the darn step cut Izmash puts in their "civilian" rifle chambers, as the brass at the neck gets worked much more there.

There are other reasons to reload besides economy.... though when I load my cast boolits, it costs me about 7 pennies a round.

my mini 14 would be laughing at such lackluster performance.lol. i don't know how far she throws brass but it is far. i dont have an ak, but it doesn't sound too excessive. also welcome to the THR & i hope you enjoy your new rifle.
I had a old guy at the range fussing with me because my Mini-14 was throwing brass at him 8 feet away!

Many semi-autos toss their empties quite a distance. 8 - 10 feet is pretty common but the AK-47s seem to have a more robust ejection system that can really make finding spent brass a challange in the grass!:D

my cz52 throws the brass about 20 feet at 4 o'clock.

its not so much the 20 feet as the 4 o'clock; cause im shooting at 1 o'clock

i have to wait 3 hours before i can pick up my brass.

Re: budget, keep your eyes open for a used AR, you might get lucky. I snagged a barely used S&W M&P 15 MOE for $800 not too long ago. I wasn't even looking for it, it just fell into my lap. Considering the MSRP ($1400) and normal retail price ($1100-1300), I couldn't help but bring it home with me.

My mini 14

would also laugh at "such lackluster performance".:D Before I switched to a smaller bushing mine would throw brass 30-40 feat easily. I really have no idea how far it actually would have gone if the range cover weren't there to slow it down.:what: My Saiga throws "steel" all over the place. My new mini-30 is quite tame by comparison. My most recent aquisition is a Zastave PAP and it throws the cases several yards as well. I will never bother trying to reload 7.62x39.:D

Heck my 1892 will toss them a lot further than 3 yards if I cycle the gun quickly while still on my shoulder and it isn't even a semi, and my 1911 just laughs at 3 yards. Bouncing off the back wall at the indoor range with me chasing the brass all over is usually what happens unless I shoot reduced loads.

I have a Mini 14 that drops the brass over in the next county. Seriously, probably 40 feet if an inch. On the other hand, MOST of my rifles drop the brass pretty close to my feet. M14, M1A, FAL, even the BAR doesn't push the brass more than about 3 feet.

I used to have an SKS that would throw brass easily 20'. I lost a lot of reloadable Prvi Partizan brass that way.

Kalashnikovs and SKSes are military firearms. They're designed for reliability, not ease of finding your (probably steel cased and not reloadable) brass. It's normal.

That reminds me of shooting my .45 and having the hot case hit the booth wall to my right and bounced inside my shirt collar. My reaction was to grab the hot case until I realized I had a loaded and cocked .45 in my hand. I just started laughing. Now I wear T-shirts to the range.

My first AK-74 would throw steel (brass) over 30 yards... of course it had an oversized gas port and was knocking the trunion back a little each shot...

All wonderful reasons why I'm so grateful that I don't have to endure public shooting ranges any more. More than a little unnerving to have to shoot next to a knucklehead slinging steel cases all over the place, bouncing off me and my expensive guns.

It's funny, but I never minded being hit with spent cartridge cases while at the range. I always just assumed it was part of charm of the shooting experience. I mean, here I am preparing myself for deadly combat. Why should I worry about a few pieces of brass or mild steel. I react the same way to people who complain they are offended by the mild ammonia smell that Wolf ammo gives off when it is shot. Folks are so fussy these days!
