Spiral Muzzle Brake

Briefly stopped by a store last week and saw a really sharp rifle (Rem 700 action, heavy bbl, looked like an HS tactical stock, 300WSM) with a really weird looking muzzle brake. Not an add-on - 4 or 5 spiral grooves (not holes) cut into the last 2" or so of the barrel. Anybody seen anything like this?

Yep - it looks like that, only cut into the barrel itself.

So it's not a muzzle break? It's not going to make the rifle loud as hell?

seems like it does nothing to the noise, but makes the muzzle flash next to invisible

It probably had a cut just behind the flash elinimator so a suppressor could be mounted too like the ones below from Smith Enterprises:
