Sporting clays equipment change?

Hey Guys,

This Sunday I had the best day yet on the sporting clays course. I shot 89/100 for True-pairs. I’m normally a mid 70’s shooter for mostly Report-pairs and a couple of True-pairs in the round.

I made a few changes this time. Normally I shoot chokes: Light mod/skeet. This time I used: mod/light mod. I also used Winchester super target instead of Remington gun club target.

I’m wondering if either: I had a great day and this is in my head, or if those changes really helped my game by being more in line with my swing and shooting style. And still had a great day haha. Ive been shooting clays for a bit over a year now and would love to hear some of you seasoned shooters thoughts and advice.

the chokes and shells may have done it, with a little of you? shoot that combo at several shoots and if the improvement is still there, you are good to go. 89-100 is not shabby shooting in my mind.

Personally, I prefer Gun Clubs to anything Winchester except their AA line. Choking up is always better than "spray and pray". I use a 1oz factory load for tournaments typically running a bout 1250. There isn't a target out there that a 1oz load won't crush if you do your part. The other reason is that I also like to shoot FITASC and that has a max 1oz load allowed.

Tinkering with chokes can make a difference. Shoot, some change out chokes from station to station but that really takes any fun and realism out of it for me.

When used my BPS I started with the Skeet choke. A few rounds later I went with improved. It made a difference. A few rounds later I went to modified and did worse so I stuck with improved.

Then I got a new gun. SxS straight stock game gun choked Imp/Imp. Not ideal but so fun to shoot and it’s a real hunting gun......you know....to practice hunting.

Anyway both these guns were 20 ga and I’m usually good for 35-40/50 of round where I play.

The ammunition could have been the difference, the chokes could have been the difference or quite possibly it was both.

Just because a choke is labeled M for example doesn’t mean it has Modified constriction. This is true mostly with OEM chokes, aftermarket chokes like Carlsons’s, Briley and Trulock are usually good to go.

Most people are over choked. Looks like you were the opposite and were using chokes that were too open.

several of my friends and I have been shooting federal 1 oz of # 8 at 1290 fps with good results at T-S-SC,s with chokes to match the games.

The current thinking among those who shoot tournament level sporting clays is to use M or tighter and just shoot the target. That said, just because a choke tube is labeled one thing; that is merely the starting point. How it performs in your gun is also affected by your choice of ammo and your internal barrel characteristics.
