I'm more of a rifle/pistol guy but I'm taking one of the guys I work with to shoot sporting clays.

He's got a long barreled automatic 12 gage shotgun. I only have a Winchester 1300 pump riot shotgun. Is this suitable for sporting clays?

What load should you use for sporting clays?

Thanks,
comacho:uhoh:

If you only have fixed choke on your shotguns get a variety of target loads in different shot sizes for different target presentations. Usually you can do an entire course with an Improved Cylinder choke and be fine if the targets aren't set to difficult.

Buy 7 1/2s, 8s and some 9s for targets. 7 1/2s for longer targets and rabbits 8s and 9s for the closer flyers. Your 1300 may be a handicap but it will be fun regardless.

You may not win many trophies shooting SC with a Cylinder bore riot gun, but it's great training and a hoot to boot.

Kudu nailed it. Vary the load for the presentation.

Thanks you gentlemen. I will use my riot shotgun. I really didn't need to spend the money for another shotgun at this time.

:banghead: This is not what we meant. It's always a good time to buy another shotgun. :D

After shooting sporting clays you may be addicted and race to your local gun shop to drool over a new shotgun.

I disagree, if you're just going out to have fun, go with 3dr 1 1/8oz #8. I buy mine at WalMart for $14.88 for 100.

I shot the entire CA State Sporting Clays Championship with #7.5's

Don't worry about loads or chokes, just go out and have fun.

P.S. When somebody says you can use xxxxx choke for sporting clays, they don't know what they're talking about. Sporting Clays can have targets as close as 15 yards and as far as 75 yards.

If you asked me what choke to use, I'd say the correct one for the shot.

That bit of advice is worth its weight in gold; my background is mainly in revolvers & pistols, but I recently got started in clays shooting, and I love to shoot trap with my Beretta 686e Sporting O/U; I usually shoot the Remington Gun Club #GC12 shotshells (7.5 shot) with a mod choke. Dicks or WalMart usually has these shotshells for under $4.00/ box. I'm making slow but steady progress with trap shooting, and the more experienced shooters always offer advice, which I graciously appreciate. And I'm having a h@ll of a lot fun while I'm at it.
