The post on pumps got me thinking. So as not to jump on that post, I was wondering; if a person were to use a pump on sporting clays, what choke would they use? I quess length would be a matter of preference, but choke seems more important. One guy said on the other post he used 26" IC. I only shot sporting clays once & would like to do it again. Just looking for thoughts on this. thanks,

Depends on your loads, courses and personal preferences.

I use trap grade reloads, and when using one of my 870s usually use either an IC or Light Mod.I have shot my home course with a Skeet choke, but felt under choked for maybe 40% of the shots.

Depends on the layout of the course...

I shot a very technical course recently-- it was tough, but there wasn't a target beyond 30 yards.

I've been to other courses where they were throwing 70+ yard targets that weren't hard to HIT, but they were hard to BREAK. That's just stupid.

Most courses seem to be set up with the idea that 10/14 stations can easily be handled with the IC choke and then there are those last few set up as "separator" stations - to separate the M class top shots and make sure NO one gets a perfect score - typically a M or tighter is necessary. If your pump has interchangeable tubes then carry one of each. If I had to shoot with a fixed choke pump, I would most likely look for a 28" barrel choked Modified with the reasoning as follows - I can always use spreader loads for a few targets in my face but I will still have enough choke for those at some distance

My model 12 is fixed full. I don't get that luxury, so I change wads. Windjammers for close stuff and AA12 for handicap distance.

XD- you might want to look at the spreader loads available from several companies - they will make your pattern open up anywhere from one to two constrictions.

The place I shoot often has 10 stations and all except one are true pairs. Most all of use shoot with skeet chokes or IC. Most of the shots are 25 Yds more or less.
