Sportsman's Guide NATO .308

Sportsman's Guide has what they call "NATO .308 Ammo. Late 70s/early 80s manufacture. NC/BE. 146gr. FMJ with MV of only
2,252 fps. Portuguese manufacture.

Doesn't sound like NATO 7.62 to me at those velocities. Maybe ammo for CETME?

Anybody out there used this stuff?

I wouldn't touch that stuff if you gave it to me.

If it doesn't come in battle packs don't buy it. I had a blow-out with Chilean ammo on my FAL 2yrs ago and ended up with a bloody nose and a ruined mag.

I think the MV figures are a misprint, it should be 2752. The Port 7.62 is top quality and packed in 200 round battle-packs. I picked up 1K from AIM and I like it. I read and was told that Sportsmans Guide had the same stuff.

Buy it. It's amongst the best stuff out there.

OK, I'm back. I went to their site and checked it out. It's the good stuff, 200 round battle-packs and 1K wooden cases. You won't go wrong with this stuff.

soda and nemesis, I've got a small quantity (200 rd. battle pack ordered). Price delivered is about the same as 60rds. of USA, UMC or American Eagle white box ammo. Not reloadable. But non-corrosive.

I thought I'd try out some in my "beat around gun" and see how it liked them.

Portugese 7.62NATO is good stuff.
Cheap, clean and accurate. I have gotten some pretty good groups out of my Savage with it.
I say try some and see if you like it.
It is NC, so you don't have to worry about it rusting your deer rifle to peices.

For surplus ammo, the Portuguese stuff sold in "battle packs" is pretty nice in my experience. Before I came across this, I would buy surplus ammo a box or two at a time, and was always disappointed with how dirty and crusty a few of the rounds would be. (Though the Radway Green stuff wasn't bad, IMI was marginal, and the Chilean stuff was downright nasty.)

Now, I say: "Once you've had vaccuum-packed, you'll never go back!" The Portuguese ammo, although of similar vintage to the others, comes out of the boxes clean and shiny; it looks respectable enough to even put in a rifle and shoot.

One warning, though: They have some steel in the "bullet" area. I haven't cut one apart to investigate where, so I can't pass on any first-hand knowledge other than that a magnet will stick to mine. That is unacceptable at some shooting ranges, so you may want to check this out ahead of time before buying a truckload of it.

edit: I'm not even sure it's steel, but even a weak magnet will stick to it. The headstamp is "BF 80 28".

I've always gotten my Porty ammo from SG. That MV quote is a misprint but they still use it. Why they don't correct it, I don't know. Good stuff. Not match grade through my guns but great for running through FALs, CETMEs, .308 AKs, etc.

I would guess that the jacket material is bi-metal. A lot of European countries use this in their military ammo.

I concur, I believe the MV was a misprint. I've shot several thousand rounds of the Portugese. It's excellent ammo. Recommended.

indian ammo is pure ????, bullet seating problems, pressure problems, i wouldnt let it near my m1a... port surplus on the other hand, is clean, shoots nice and love it, same with south african ammo, aimsurplus is selling SA @ 147 for 980 rds

I didn't know any better and bought 50 rounds to try out my "new" FAL...

3 rounds out of 50 didn't go "bang" at all, sometimes the lack of pressure wouldn't cycle the next round, sometimes the brass would sail clear across the county...

I'll be buying Port next time.

I have been shooting the Port Surplus for a little ofver a year now, and have had excellent results with it. I have gotten around 2700 FPS out of my SAGIA 308. See the results HERE

I will shoot a lot more of it for sure!!
