Heard on WLEX news this morning that the Sportsmans Warehouse in Lexington, Ky will be reopening in June. Same location. Maybe they will have bullets.

The one in Billings closed last month. No notice, just an empty building. There was a dispute some where in the lease contract, plus a shiny new Cabela's nearby hurt them pretty badly.

the one in TX near me was great. Just not enough traffic or probably marketing to bring in traffic.

Yep, I miss the one in Lewisville, TX...closed a bit over a year ago. Wish they'd come back and give Bass Pro/Cabela's some competition.

Their gun counter was well stocked, their prices were reasonable, and their hired help was great.

I was in Alaska last August and stopped in two Sportsman's Warehouse. They seem to be doing well up there. I know there's one in Fairbanks and one in Anchorage.

I wish they'd put something in the Raleigh NC area. We have nothing. Gander Mountain I just as soon do without then get robbed. I refuse to go to Dick's with their Anti 2nd Amendment position.

What is their position, exactly? The Dick's here sells guns and ammo. I don't frequent them, because they're typically too expensive, but I'm curious.

We have one here in Ankeny Iowa, I buy everything that I can (guns, ammo, camping stuff, grilling supplies, fishing stuff..etc) there. Great prices and great people, I hope that they never close!

Sptsmns Whse...

Seems they closed certain of the local SW's, and left others open. Apparently it was a decision arrived @ @ corporate HQ, and some they closed appeared to be doing a thriving business, my local SW included.

Here, too, they had a greater variety of reloading components than anywhere else convenient to me. Prices were OK, not great, but not awful either.

The one thing they did NOT do that I'd have liked, was to deal in used firearms, and C&R weapons, but, hey, nobody's perfect.

P'raps they're slowly coming to their corporate senses. We can hope, anyhow.

One reason I miss SW, particularly, is that my local Gander Mt has virtually squat for reloading supplies. Years ago they used to be good with those, and suddenly they weren't. I asked about it, and was told that the guy who handled that, quit, and they hadn't got anyone to replace him. That was quite some time ago, and if they cared about being in the reloading components business, they'd have found somebody by now to handle the ordering for that. Must be just too much of a hassle or something for GM. There is a Cabela's somewhat near me, and they have more reloading stuff than Gander, but still not nearly what the SW had.

Oh, well, there's always Midway and Midsouth and the other mail order businesses, if someone local doesn't want my $$.

I live in the Denver area. We have two SW's, two Gander mountains and a Bass Proshops. I'd trade both SW's and a Gander for one Cabela's. Any takers?

According to their website, They're "supposed" to be building one here. For several years now. I think our market is saturated as it is. I doubt we'll see a Cabela's in Denver, but with all the big game hunting and fishing here you'd think this would have been the FIRST place they'd put one.

how is that this company went under, when gander mountain (which completely and utterly sux!) is doing well??

It has something to do with them not paying their bills on time and they were no longer able to get credit to buy directly from the manufacturers. When they were put on a cash only basis they could no longer support so many stores. The idea was to operate a few stores to get their credit back so that they could open up the stores they closed.

I think the question is why couldn't they pay their bills on time while enough people are shopping at places that suck for them to stay open.

The SW where I am never closed, it just became a Wholesale Sports location. I haven't noticed much change from before. Same people, same stuff, roughly the same prices--at least for what I've looked at.

jackpot!

if people stop shopping at crappy, WAY overpriced places like gander mountain, they would go under, opening the way for much more reasonably priced competition that's better for the customer.

however, people still shop at gander.....

Yep, that one's been in the works for years. I think the economic downturn has slowed its opening.

FWIW, I think both Cableas and Gander are way overpriced and prefer SW, at least when they actually stocked stuff. Maybe that will change now.

The store in Tucson is doing well. Still a real low stock of reloading components though.
They really have a lot of camping gear out though, getting ready for the season.

EVERYBODY seems to beat Gander Mountain's prices on ammo. If I buy new, I typically go to Walmart or my friendly local gun store.

true that! :)

the SW near me had a much bigger gun selection too, including semi auto rifles (which my local ganders don't carry), and also cheaper gun prices, and friendlier, more knowledgeable staff. gander mountian employees seem to learn their firearms knowledge from movies

Interesting all the sportsmans warehouses out here are now called "Discount sports" and its really the same store with a new name. But since the loss of Gi Joes I would love to see a better sporting goods stores move in. We have dicks but their hunting sections is limited at best.
