Hi, new to AR15 shooting and I would like a recommendation for a spotting scope that will allow me to see 5.56 holes at 200 yards.
any recommendations?
thanks

200y is short range even for ar15. I would think just about any spotting scope would allow you to see 223 holes at that distance though choice of target will make it much easier or harder. A little contrast with the background goes a long way

20-27x are typical power for spotting scopes used to see bullet holes. About any decent scope in that range will allow you to see holes in the white part of the target at 200 yds. As Taliv indicates, seeing holes in the black is much more difficult unless the holes are back lit. Mirage complicates the task of seeing .223 holes at that range and beyond by roiling the air between you and the target. I use a Leupold scope with a 50mm objective for NRA High Power but I recommend at least 60mm unless you buy really good glass. The sort of standard at High Power matches is the somewhat pricey Kowa 80mm series of scopes.

Most highpower shooters in this part of the country use Kowa scopes. I have a TSN-821 with a 27x eyepiece. I guess the theory is that light gathering ability (80 mm objective) and optical clarity trumps raw power. I agree, sometime .22 holes are difficult to find in the black bull, depending on light and background.

A buddy of mine has one of the old Unertl Marine Corps scopes. I think that its 60x with a huge objective. We compared it with the Kowa when sighting in 30 cals at 600 yds. The Kowa was better.
