Spray Paint for Rifle Stock

Has anyone tried the RustOleum Textured paints on their synthetic stock?

I'm considering the Sandstone multi color textured paint or the Stone in tucson Rock to make one or two of my boring all black rifle stocks look more like custom camo stocks but don't want it to flake off or feel gummy.

I've used the Krylon Camo paint with good results on a stock but the textured paints look like they will deliver a multi color custom look with one application?

Never used it on a gun stock. I've used it on other things and it seems to hold up pretty well. Didn't use it on anything that'll get banged around like a gun stock, though.

Let us know how it comes out. I have a black synthetic stock I might want to do too.

These paints are two different types of paint in the same can that do not mix together, that's how you get two colors out of one can. Before it was available in a can, you could get it for professional paint setups and it was called Zolatone. I'd say use all the cleanlieness protocols that go with painting and go for it. You'll have plenty left over for touch up.

If your synthetic stock is particularly smooth, I'd say rough it up with a red or green scotchbrite pad first for good adhesion. Then wipe it down with a good degreaser that's not overly agressive, mask off the bedding area, tack rag it, clean again, hang it up and paint it.

Overly agressive degreasers would be stuff like acetone or Lacquer thinner, which will both attack the synthetic.

If you really want "custom camo stocks" spend the extra $15 for Duracoat
paint and borrow a friend's airbrush. The finish will also last much longer.

I have not used the two tone paints but I have used the textured paints that feel almost like sand grains are mixed in it. The two rifles in question are both f-class-ish rifles that I use for longer range hunting. The paint coatings do hold up well, I really like the textured griping surface. One rifle is O.D. base with brown splotching and a slight hint of black speckling to blend the colors. The other is straight brown.
