This reminds me of the NY Zodiac killer of improvised weapons. This article doesn't nearly encompass how stupid the criminal or LE was during the time. But mistakes were made.

I don't think homemade firearms should ever be illegal. In the serial killer case above, or privately, they don't usually work.

From a mechanical standpoint, very cool. I like deviations from the norm when it comes to firearms and ammunition.

It got to be a real pest here, hard to eradicate from my yard.
It is highly invasive, like any grass, and nothing in the US eats it. I read that, during Reconstruction, the Government encouraged planters to switch from cotton to bamboo as a cash crop, since it was less labor intensive, Bamboo was commonly used for outdoor furniture, fishing rods, and other items before the advent of plastics.

When I lived in NJ, a friend of mine wanted some bamboo to make a fishing pole. A mutual friend of ours had some growing in his back yard, and asked how long? The friend who wanted to make the pole said as long as possible. When he went to pick them up they were 40' long!
I Had taken some shoots to plant at my home as a privacy barrier between me and my neighbor. I kept them in check by cutting them back every time I cut the grass. Apparently the new owner did not keep them in check and when I went back 10 years later they had taken over!
Where my brother lived in WV a whole stand of them just appeared one day and grew to over 30' tall 3" diameter!
I have seen it grow in several place here in NC.

Im in mid W. Michigan. My down below neighbor has a patch. It spread under his fence into my property. I thought it was cool. I had no idea how invasive it is. I finaly discovered it was not good as one of my septic drain fields is down there. My patch got huge and it took me 2 days to cut it down and it took a dump truck to get it away. I spent weeks digging up roots I could get at. For the last several years I have to watch for sprouts, to cut them off and squirt Tordon RTU on the stub to help kill the root. I've seen a stalk of it grow nearly as tall as me in a couple weeks if I don't check down there. It's a never ending battle.

Most impressive use of bamboo in Asia is as scaffolding. They flex in hurricane winds. Steel will snap and fall.

My neighbor had several large stands of bamboo around his home during the hurricanes in '04 and '05. We had three direct hits from category 2 and 3 hurricanes. The bamboo did a lot to block the winds, and wasn't damaged much. And while it whipped around a lot, it's not heavy enough to damage anything like a tree would have.

It is an absolute mess to maintain, though. It grows like a weed.

That is because bamboo is a type of grass. And, if it is growing where you don't want it, it IS a weed, just like corn in a soybean field is a weed.
