Any spring squirrel hunters out there? The season here in Kansas started June 1st. I went June 2nd. We've had lots of rain here so i figured lots of mud and mosquitos. Fortunately, the woods were wet, but not muddy and the mosquitos were held off with a generous application of Deep Woods Off. I took a folding chair to keep my butt dry and sitting in one spot I killed 4 squirrels in the first hour. Walked around for awhile and could have killed more, but decided I didn't want to skin more than 4. So with four in the freezer I can officially call my first hunt of this squirrel season a success. Used my favorite squirrel rifle, a Remington 541S, and am proud to say I made 3 out off 4 head shots; not bad for a geezer. I've hunt squirrels for 60 years and it's still exciting.

I love squirrel hunting but can't stand it until September or later. It's fun to get out in the woods but the ticks and skeeters are brutal. Usually end up going fishing instead so at least I can drink beer :D

It opens here Aug. 15. I'll go walk around with a 22, but it is primarily an excuse to get into the woods scouting for deer. Archery opens here the 3rd weekend in Sept. I rarely actually shoot a squirrel until after deer season ends in January. January and February are my prime times for small game. Plus I get in some turkey scouting before the March opener.

No More.

I'm with HB. Ticks, chiggers, skeeters, snakes, gnats, sweat bees and hot temps put an end to my squirrel and dumpling cravings until September at the earliest.
There have been many nights that I have awakened to sever itching from seed tick bites that were the result of early bushytail hunts. I am not that mad at them anymore.
