Gibbs Rifle Company ( http://www.gibbsrifle.com/1903-a4_sniper_rifle_.html) started putting together the 1903A4 "historical remakes" well over a year ago. They are using 1903's supplied to them from James River Armory ( http://jamesriverarmory.com/ ). James River sets them up in the A4 configuration. Gibbs then adds the scope, mounts and other accouterment's. I was fortunate enough to fondle one at this past years SHOT Show. They did a outstanding job on it, so much so that I ordered one. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting.
What I can tell you is that I have is a 1903A3 and a M-1 Garand from James River. They do excellent job in refinishing/refurbishing ........and they are great shooters to boot.

As far as what AIM Surplus has, I would bet they are from Gibbs. That seems to be the going price. IMO, if it's a Gibbs.........BUY IT!

This hopefully won't stir anything up, but I remember reading that Gibb's used 1903 drill rifle recievers for their reproductions. I'm sure they are safe, but you should definetly look into the rifle more. I also believe that the scope is China made.

One nice thing about Gibb's is they at least have the decency to add mark the rifle stating that its a repro (barrel dates, etc), unlike some other vintage rifle company (Ahem, Michel's Mauser's) (By company I mean organized crooks).

If I had 1k to push around, I would get a used 1903 for $400-600, then get a repro mount/scope <--- easier said then done, might have to settle for something that looks similar.

As a suggestion for scoping: I've been hoping to get a Mauser for quite a while and put a POSP on it. (The following should work b/c the m1903 is very similar to a mauser). This is a pretty simple procedure. All you have to do is purchase a mauser slide rail for the posp, d&t it, slide on the scope mount (can be a weaver centered or a scope/mount combo which will be off sided to the left for right handed shooters). In this case the scope, mount, and rail will cost you about $400. Throw in a little extra if you have a local gunsmith do the drill & tapping.

Best regards.
