Springfield Armory EMP...

I apologize for bringing back an old thread, but I recently acquired an EMP 40 through a trade (s/n 54xx) and have had nothing but problems with it. The original owner sent it back to Springer who subsequently replaced the slide and barrel but apparently to no avail. I took it to the range and fired 50 factory winchester white box 165 FMJ's and had at least 8 FTF's and on a couple of occasions the slide locked open with rounds remaining in the magazine. Has anyone ever experienced this before? I also tried some handloads (4.6gr of Clays powder with 180gr FP) and checked them all for loose fitment in the barrel. Nearly every handload and some factory rounds blew the primer. I am at my wits end with this gun and I guess I'll have to send it back to SA for another round. I can't believe they can get away with putting a $1000+ price tag on a gun that has this many problems.

Thanks,
Curt

It sounds like it is chambered too tightly. The early 9mm guns had tight chambers and extractors...I'll bet yours is an early gun where they erred on the side of of "tight".

Since it had a pre-existing problem, I'm hoping you got a good deal on it. It has been my experience that staying with the design chambering will usually yield the best reliability

Will SA ream the chamber? Or should I take it to a smith and have them ream/throat it? I just want to be able to shoot this gun and not have constant feed issues and reliability issues. At this point I would never use this as my carry gun as I couldn't depend on it for anything.

My 3 digit serial numbered 9MM EMP had an under SAMMI minimum chamber. SA reamed it. No charge for it and they reimbursed my shipping I paid to get it to them.

Now it is still tight, but any reload that fits the Wilson gauge (and a tiny tiny more) will cycle in the gun.

I gauge all my sized brass and toss the ones that fail. I load the rest.

My EMP will show more signs of pressure on the primers vs the same loads shot in other 9MM with more generous chambers.

Call SA. They will take care of you. Mine is flawless now. Runs like a Singer sewing machine. (That's good ;))

What have you paid for your EMPs?

I had an opportunity to buy a new one for $760 and I passed on it. I think I missed out on a deal.

When the EMP was first announced I wanted one because it was originally supposed to be chambered for .45 GAP. When SA announced it was going to come out in 9mm I gave up on it.

I think so too, I paid about $200 more for one, just under $1k. The 9mm models are hard to find, but the .40 seems to be plentiful...they have the steel frame

I'll give them a call again and see what they have to say. I talked to them once and believe it or not they told me to shoot round nosed ammo for a .40 cal. I kind of scratched my head at that one (unless I were handloading something like Berry's).

Hi all. I am a new EMP 9mm owner and would like to get some aftermarket grips for it. Will a standard 1911 "officers" size grip fit the EMP or do I have to order grips specially made for the EMP? Thanks for your help

Why? That was a good decision. I think 9mm is actually the right round for a gun the size and weight of the EMP, because follow-up shots are quick. Plus, you actually get decent mag capacity.

Grips

ruger67,

I changed the grips on my Kimber Ultra Carry to Hogue wrap arounds and put the original Kimbers on my EMP they fit perfect along with the Kimber grip screws. You just need to watch the ambi safety,..... I put a Ed Brown single sided tactical safety in mine so the grips don't interfere with the safety on the right side. I think that most any "officers" grips will work if the safety is changed. Otherwise, you'll need to go with EMP specific grips that are cut for the ambi safety. You also may want to keep an eye on the mag release notch on the grips you choose as it can be off a fraction also. Hope this helps.

just because your paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you!:what:

Thanks for your replies. I do intend on eventually switching to an Ed Brown Tactical safety also so the ambi safety shouldn't be a problem. I don't mind having to tweak a little if my selection of grips is better with the "officer" size grips versus grips made for the EMP only.

I have a 9mm EMP. It's special for many reasons. It comes with THREE magazines. It has a fantastic trigger. It's super accurate. It's reliable - like if Glock made a revolver reliable. It's small and easy to carry. The THREE magazines are perfectly made pieces of art. Cartridges almost fall into them with no effort.

If the average HK 9mm pistol is worth 800+ dollars, the EMP is a bargain at 1050.00.

Plus - it's VERY nice looking.

I ordered an EMP 9mm from my local dealer. It looked nice in the case, brought it home only to find out that the slide catches and sometimes locks open in the disassembly notch area. With the mag out I can feel a slight "catch" in that area, but with the mag in the slide lock catches in the disassembly notch. Has any one else had this experience? My local dealer told me to call SA, which I will do tomorrow. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

New guy bringing back a older thread but felt the need to add my two cents. Mine is going back again for the same FTE problem that they "fixed" last time. Two trips to the range and two trips to FedEx hub. This is getting old fast and I am losing faith in a gun purchased for daily carry. SA says sometimes the tensioner loses tension for an unknown reason. Yikes! So, even if they fix it this time does that mean it could randomly lose tension just a day before I need it in the real world and not punching paper? How many owners that have had FTE problems have had them succesfully repaired by the factory and feel comfortable trusting it for carry? I don't want a safe queen.
