I am picking this one up this afternoon. I was wondering if anyone here has gotten one of their own yet.

Thanks for letting me be a part of your forum! :D

I've had the 5" blue model for a while now. I'd say its my favorite plastic gun overall.

On quirk, you have to have the grip safety depressed to rack the slide.

Not yet. The son has an XD-9 and I thought it was a pretty decent gun. Have fondled the XD-45 and put it on my short list as a potential next buy.

Oh yeah. In fact, I think I got the very first 5" tactical XD-45ACP sold in the state of North Carolina, back in February - when Springfield Armory reps were still saying that the 5" models wouldn't be available until June or July.

I love mine, and you'll love yours. That bi-tone looks really slick, too. I'm a tad envious of that.

'Card --

Did you replace the grips on yours yet, or not? I've got big hands so I want something that forms to the hand a little bit better.

It was funny when I was talking to the guy at the gun shop and I wasn't even thinking of dropping the coin on one until later this year, but as soon as I saw they had the 5" Tac with the bi-tone I fell in love instantly.

This is only my 2nd handgun. I'm 26 and am graduating from my Full Size 9mm Custom Chrome Baby Desert Eagle, and I love that gun.

I've had my 5in XD-45 for about 3 weeks now. Ran about 700 rounds thru it so far without any trouble. I'm not too wild about the trigger pull on it (my 1911's have me spoiled) but I'm going to send it off to Canyon Creek for one of their 3lb triggers.

Honestly? No. I've tweaked handguns before, from grips to sights to trigger jobs, but I haven't done a thing to my XD yet. It just hasn't needed anything, to be honest. I may put some night sights on it at some point, but other than that I can't see changing anything.

If I was serious about competition shooting or something I'd probably mess around with stuff, but I'm not, and I really like the grip and the trigger the way they are right out of the box.

To tell you the truth, it's probably the least interesting firearm I own. It shoots more accurately than I do, disassembles in a snap, cleans easily, happily eats any kind of ammo I feed it, has never had a malfunction of any type, doesn't need any accessories or tweaking, feels great in my hand, points quick, and just keeps plugging along. If I'd been looking for a high-maintenance relationship I'd be really disgusted with it by this point.

I'd be interested in seeing it if you get one put on.

Having not actually fired this exact model just yet I can't comment on what I want to do with it, but I can almost say with certainty that I will replace the grip, but it's got nothing to do with the design.

As far as competition shooting -- it's something I can see getting interested in, but I doubt this would be the one I would use for it. I just need some more experience. Haven't fired a whole lot of different models and brands at this point, but my accuracy has been good at the range so it's something I might take up. :)

Welcome to the Forum! Great sidearm you've got there. I have a 4" Service XD-45.

This is about your only option for getting a more hand-forming grip. There is no swapping out the grips on yours, as they are incorporated into the pistol frame itself.

Oh, and once you've got your pistol, you may want to check out the HS2000/XDTalk forum. Lots of XD fans hang out there, and it's a good crowd. Lots of solid info on XD's, accessories, problem-solving, etc.

Hey! Card! What kind of night sight's did you get? I would like to put some on mine but havent found any yet. By the way, I had atrigger job done on My Tac & am very happy with it but I don't really think it is necessary.:what:

I just put a set of Heinie Straight-Eight tritium sights on my XD9 Tactical, and they give a VERY nice sight picture. The TruGlo Tritium-Fiber-Optic sights also look very nice.

However, if you plan to install XD sights yourself, be aware that the slide dovetails are often VERY tight - I literally spent almost 3 hours hammering the old sights out and pounding the Heinies in. Definitely get a bigger hammer, a non-marring punch, and file down the sight dovetail first.

Naturally, I later found out on the XDTalk forum that the factory installs their sights with a machine press! Therefore, I highly suggest mailing the slide to Springfield Armory to have sights installed; if you send a money order for $95.00, SA will sell you the Heinie Straight-Eight sights and install them free of charge. (P.S.: Call them and get a quote on return shipping, I can't find that info right now.)

My XD45ACP Service Model is my favorite pistol and my new daily carry. It has been flawless, so far.

I originally intended to get a trigger job and TruGlo TFO sights but, after firing it for a while, like 'Card, I'm quite happy with the trigger just the way it is. I MIGHT still eventually get the TFo's but, at this point, I'm not in any hurry. The stock sights suit my purposes just fine.

I finally got to the range today, and all I can say is WOW!!! :what:

This is a great pistol, and an absolute joy to fire. I would say that everyone should try one out if they haven't.

If you don't own one of these, you're missing out. :neener:

How is the recoil with the 5 inch? I don't mind alot of recoil, but I'm not real fond of flippy guns which alot of the plastic pistols suffer from. How would you say it compares to a 1911.

A little more recoil than a 1911? Huh, I would have thought it would be less, but what do I know? I just saw a used Springfield "loaded" lightweight with three 8 round Chip McCormick mags and Heine night sights in good shape for $537. The Springfield XD .45 4" model was brand new for the same price. Still not sure which one to get...and then I saw two Springfield XD 5" models, one bi-tone like in the pic at the top, and the other blued. Now I REALLY can't make up my mind! You might have made things worse for me, Demiurge!:D :D

What is the reasoning behind having to have the grip safety depressed to rack the slide?

Wish glock made a prac/tac version of their 36. Then I could quit looking at that thing!

I concur. 9+ months with mine now, and I'm still tickled to death with it. My Glock 21 is giving me dirty looks because it hasn't been out of the safe in so long.

Be careful in considering the slip-on for the XD. It's got a grip safety, and depending on where you placed the sleeve, they might interfere. Just a thought.

It looks just like mine. Just picked it up two weeks ago. Only put 150 rounds through it. Hope to put a couple hundred through it this weekend. Less perceived recoil than my Glock 23. I am going to change out the sights.:banghead:
