I've been hearing many good things about the Springfield EMP. Accuracy, form fitting for small hands, great concealment, reliable, etc. But how do 1911 fans feel about 1911's in 9mm? Does it do the timeless pistol justice?

longeyes ~

As I have posted here many, many times: I love my Glock 26. It is absolutely the perfect carry gun for me, fits my hand acceptably well, and I love the point-n-shoot simplicity of it.

And I think the EMP is worth the extra money because it fills a niche that the baby Glock simply doesn't fill.

First, the EMP is 1911-slim instead of Glock-fat. That makes it just that much more concealable than my beloved G26.

More important, the EMP fits smaller hands better than a G26 does. My hands are only medium small, not small small, and the G26 is right on the verge of being too fat for me. I have friends with smaller hands than mine who literally cannot get their hands around the baby Glock but who have no trouble with the EMP's dimensions. These folks are, quite rightly, willing to pay a premium for a quality gun that actually fits -- because it is really hard for truly small-handed folks to find quality equipment suited to them.

Along those same lines, the EMP has a very gentle recoil compared to the baby Glock. It's a steel vs polymer thing. Did I mention it is really hard for small-handed shooters to find appropriate equipment? Someone with super-small hands looking for a gentle kicker in a defensive caliber is often just flat out of luck. That EMP is going to fill an important market niche there, too.

The EMP has a 1911 trigger instead of a Glock trigger. Many informed shooters are willing to pay extra for that crisp 1911 trigger.

The EMP is more adaptable and more easily personalized than a Glock. Custom grips, anyone?

And finally: The G26 is cute. The EMP is adorable. Yeah, I know. What can I say? I'm a girl.

How does EMP compare to STI LS9?

STI LS9 looks to have 2 less rounds, but thinner, $200 cheaper, and longer barrel.

It is all pax says it is and more. Mine has been 100% reliable with everything. It is very easy to shoot fast and accurately at the same time. If you put a slim single safety on it it's even thinner and very easy to tuck in somewhere. It is pricey, but mine is very well made as well. I am not a big nine fan, but I really like my EMP.

I love 9mm 1911's! I just wish this Springfield EMP would show up @ the local shops. I think I might go ahead and over pay for this.

Okay, you convinced me, I'll try one.:D

I have a G26 and think very highly of it. I think my hands are average in size. Of course if the EMP has the feel of a 1911--slim, great trigger--that would definitely be an enticement. Too bad it's so pricey.

Thinkin' I'm a gonna build me a 1911 9mm out of a 38 super 1911... I hear it's doable. But I *want* an EMP. Badly. Just haven't figured out which kid is worth more on the open market...

you got it exactly right, pax. i, too, love glocks, but i also love 1911's. they're just different guns. we have a springfield ultra compact in 9mm, and it's a great gun to shoot. i'm sure the emp will be even better since it's built specifically for the smaller caliber platform.

9mm 1911's are just fine...

Twice the price of what? A FS 1911 from most name brands at least list price runs 7-800 bucks. Completely re-engineered for the 9, new mags, etc gotta pay for it somehow.

There was one in the shop here, and I held it, and it just fit perfectly. If I had hadn't wanted a full size 1911 to start, it would've been just about my first choice... Everything snicked and clicked and just fit really well.

But a grand is a lot, no matter how you slice it, I agree.

Hopefully there will be some more competition in the 9mm 1911 space, and bring the prices down a tad... I wouldn't complain about that at all.

Model number, sure. Lets get excited when we see pistols. They had one, before it was called EMP, in .45 GAP, but it never came to fruition. :)
Did I spell that right? :)

Without question, the new smaller grip of the EMP is great for those with smaller hands, but I want to emphasize that it also feels very, very good to those of us having larger hands. It is a feel that is hard to describe. Just...better...than the typical 1911 grip (no criticism of the standard grip; the EMP just feels better).

While at the SHOT Show, I did not get any sense that the EMP was soon to be released in a 4" or 5" version, but that is what I am hoping to see at some point in the foreseeable future.

My parents have one each of the 1911 wonder-nines, purchased in CHL anticipation.

Dad's got a Kimber Aegis - not an issue so far, very good trigger, feels good in the hand. Mom got the EMP - for the first two-hundred or so rounds it had issues going into battery, jams, couldn't finish off magazines. Eventually it loosened up, but I still prefer the Aegis in the 200-250 rounds I've shot through each.

Somehow, both are louder than any other handgun I've fired, up to and including .44 Mag. 9mm +P makes the EMP sound like a hand cannon.

gonna check one of these bad boys out at a local gun show. hopefully, it will fit nicely...

pax - you are right on the mark... well said...

I love my Glocks, my XDs and my 1911s but the EMP is a unique extension of ones self.

I have never held a firearm that feels as perfect in the hand, although the XD comes close...

Love the Nine but Can't wait for the 357 to show up!
