Springfield GI Champion: questions!

might be the grip safety tang wears hard on the web of my shooting hand

Agreed.. the bottom edge of the grip safety tang can be quite ummmm sharp on the Springfields GIs I've shot. Why I went to a extended beaver tail. I've come to a new conclusion.. maybe my NEXT 1911.. take the GI grip safety and melt it (sand the edges) blend it all to a nice easy on the skin, small tab. Still big enough to keep me away from the hammer though. :)

Regarding the GI grip safety.....

I love the look of the spur hammer that comes on the GI models, but am wondering.....will an extended beavertail allow me to keep the hammer that is factory stock, or will I need to change out the hammer as well (to one of the more modern "loop" designs)??

Probably end up with a high dollar custom before this is over.........:banghead:

wheely,
With the slide locked back... if you can unscrew the exposed portion of the guide rod, needs a small dab of loc-tite. Blue not the red (unless you want things permanent or a major PITA to deal with later).

Going to do the beavertail GS...? Probably will be changing out the hammer to a round commander style, etc or bobbing the spur (sacrilege for some, just one more tweak for others). If you're heading down that road, might as well do the sights and trigger as well. Cha-Ching$ :D

But... since Springfield is no longer offering their GI models... might want to ponder that a bit, then have SACS do the deed.

Thanks Baba, for the advice.

If a different grip safety means bobbing the hammer spur.....I won't do it.
I love the look of the hammer spur 1911.

Perhaps I will just put a band-aid over the web of my hand for shooting sessions! Or tough it out and get a callous on the web of my hand.

Now that I no longer work with my hands (went from soldier to school teacher), I am officially a "wimp".

Band aid on web of hand... my trick also, unless wearing gloves for longer range sessions... something I haven't done much as of late due to ammo replacement scarcity at present.

YES, changing to a current beaver tail would require bobbing the hammer. Also pretty extensive grinding on the frame horns, unless you got a non grind Wilson combat, but it looks bad to have it that open. Then you might be looking at better sights.. at that point it'd be better to just trade guns for a Loaded.

Bicycle gloves work great. They leave your finger tips exposed for touch and some come padded in the palm for us desk jockeys.

If the Springer edges are too sharp for you. Mine were, rounding the edges should help. BUT.. then you'd be into refinishing the gun. :( So tape, gloves might be the ticket.

I know, changing too much is not worth it!

I like the look of the GI model.....

but would rather carry and shoot a Dan Wesson CCO!
