So at the Sat. gunshow in KC I picked up the GI. Its not like I saw and thought,"That would be neat to have." and bought it. I have been wanting one real bad for awhile. My grandfather was in WWII and he brought back his 1911 and a Luger. Both of which were kept by my uncle and pawned later. (jerk) Since the replica made by Colt is way to expensive for me I decided I wanted the Springfield Armory GI.
So, at the gunshow I saw one right off the bat. It was $400 plus tax. I decided I would look around a bit before buying it. I thought $400 was a great price. Then I found another one all the way in the back that was $390. (SWEET!!!) I promptly tell the guy I'll take it. I sit there and fill out the appropriate forms and give him the money. Then I find out that the guy lives like 10 minutes from me and does this out of his house and at gunshows. He gives me his card and tells me to call if I ever need anything else. Later I find out that this is the same guy that my father-in-law bought his blued Springfield Armory Loaded model from.
So I got home and field stripped it. My initial thought was,"Dang those corners are sharp." You could almost cut yourself and thats no exaggeration. The sights are smallish but definitely usable. The trigger was was alittle heavier than I like and with alot of creep. Still the trigger was more than usable just the same.
She I started to field strip it I noticed that the bushing didn't sit in the slide quite square. One side was sticking out just slightly more than the other. Then when I took the recoil spring out I figured out why. It is very loose in the slide. I don't know how much this is going to effect the accuracy yet. The barrel to bushing fit was nice. I took her down some more and found that the feed ramp was polished and the barrel was throated. (sweet) I cleaned her up a bit and put her back together. She I started to put the slide back on the frame something was binding and I had the actually smack the slide with the heel of my hand to get it off again. Thats happened a couple time since then too. Not quite sure what thats about.
I got to take this thing out and shoot it yesterday. Since it was 15 degrees yesterday I didn't get much accuracy. I can't figure out if it was me or if it was the pistol. I should have brought my 75B with me to try that as well but I forgot it. My first shot was about 6 inched from point of aim. (ouch) I shot it some more and after about three or four shots the slide got warm enough to really distort the sight picture. I was freezing my butt off so I only shot 75 rounds and decided to save the rest for a warmer day. All 75 rounds fed and extracted perfectly. I used the factory mag and two colt stainless mags.
I detail stripped it after that and cleaned it up really good. I found a few sprue marks on various parts. The hammer, sear, disconnect, safety, and slide stop all had sprue marks. The bushing had a line(like a casting line) on it.
The tension on the extractor was properly set. and the disconnect was actually polished. (SWEET)
Hopefully tomorrow I'll have pictures and if its warmer Friday I'll try and get out and shoot again.
