Springfield Mil-Spec or S&W 5906?

Which should I buy and why?

I'm want a gun that is very comfortable to practice with. I will also be carrying it when I get my liscense. I realize that this is in a sense a caliber war, but please give you opinion on the two pistols considering all aspects of each weapon.

I have a 1911 and a 6906 and both are great range guns to practice with. Both the springfield and the S&W are pretty heavy which makes them comfortable to shoot but not to carry. 9mm ammo is gonna cost half what you will pay for 45ACP.

I owned two SA Mil-Specs (one parkerized, the other stainless) and both had reliability problems. I won't take a third swing at 'em.

I own a S&W 3906 which is the single-stack (and much rarer) version of the 5906. Thousands of rounds through it without a single FTF/FTE. Great pistol, and built like a tank.

I wouldn't use either as a carry piece though, as Bamabluesman said, too heavy.

Consider a SIG P239, or if want a higher capacity double-stack, then perhaps a Glock 19. Although they have different triggers/MOA, both are well built, reliable, accurate, "comfortable" to practice with, easy to field-strip and clean, and IMHO better CCW pistols.

I have a Springfield 1911 Mil-Spec. So far I have experienced no malfunctions, except it doesn't seem to like Speer Gold Dot 230 gr. hollowpoints. I haven't shot it much due to the prices of .45 ACP ammo. It is a bit heavy for carry, but I'm sure with the right belt and right holster, it can be carried comfortably.

I have a 5906 and it's a breeze to shoot, it is heavy though, all stainless...

I'm at 1500+ rounds through mine since I took ownership of it, not sure how many else went through it before me.

I was recently shooting it out to 50 meters, fun stuff!

Cost-wise alone i'd say the S&W. Both the gun and the ammunition for it are less expensive than the Springfield. However, if your practicing to eventually get a gun to carry or use in a HD type situation, you should try to use the gun/caliber that most closely resembles what you ultimately want to use.
