Springfield Parts???

Does anyone happen to know where one can find parts such as drop in thumb and grip safteys for 1911 style pistols from springfield or triggers,hammers etc???. I called them today and one of the customer service representives told me that offering these parts would be a saftey liability for them. ***!

the whole point of a 1911 is interchangeable parts, so you should be able to fit in standard parts from Midway/brownell's/numrich/whatever with only minor fitting.

Safeties ARE NOT "drop in" parts. A grip safety maybe. A thumb safety - absolutely no way.

Hey yeah Im looking to replace my hammer, grip safety, and trigger. I also bought hammer strut, strut pin, sear and disconnector all from wilson. I want to really take my time with this and learn some things does anyone recommend a good 1911 gunsmithing book?

the frame will have to either get welded up, or filed down if you want to change the grip safety, unless if you don't care for gaps.

if you bought the Wilson "Value Line" parts, they are MIM as well, so you aren't really gaining much over stock parts.

get the Jerry Kuhnhausen books.

I been doing a little bit of research and I saw that the Smith & Alexander .220° Grip Safety, Standard, Blued eliminates this gap between the frame and the grip saftey on the springfield. Can anyone confirm this?

it's not drop-in, you still have to file the frame tang's down and blend it to the frame.

Any easier solutions? Im not fully objected to keeping the original grip saftey I was just wondering.

You can't see that? Someone buys the part, puts it in incorrectly and something happens causing injury....deep pockets (them) gets sued.

The S&A really isn't that hard to install, you will need to buy the fitting jig (I think that's what they called it) to make getting the right radius. I did one my self a couple years ago for the first time, it really isn't that hard. Mine came out better than expected.

If you do decide to do it yourself, don't get in a hurry.


BTW: Mine was/is stainless so I didn't have to worry about refinishing the ends of the tanged after they have been properly radiused. (is radiused a word, Anyway, you get the drift.

Well because Im trying to learn a thing or two I wouldnt shoot it before haveing a gunsmith inspect my work. Take it easy I have a little bit of mechanical inclination and Im not going to just drop in and take to the range. I plan on reading a book or two before performing any polishing or file work? My original intention of buying a SA GI mil spec was to learn and personalize it. I do like these as they are but I have a long future of gun buying and learning to do, I hope you understand.
