What can you guys tell me about the Springfield SAR3? I found one at a local gun shop for $699. Good price? Decent gun?

I need to check and see if that gun fall under my counties AWB or if the AWB even applies to my town.

If that's the one with the steel Greek receiver, its the next best thing to a real H&K, and that's a stupidly low price. Please send me the name of this gun shop! ;)

P.S. The Cook County AWB prohibits the rifle, so the shop must be in a home rule town.

I'm not si sure the Heller ruling will help me. I'm in ths south subs of Chicago so I am aloud to own guns. However, there is an AWB ban for my county. I don't think the Heller ruling would overturn that, would it?

Springfield had three versions of the SAR-8, a G3/HK91 clone. The first is the SAR-3, made in Greece on HK licensed tooling. Has a steel receiver and is a very good gun. Importation of these was halted in '89, and a number of them caught in customs were re-stamped from "SAR-3" to "SAR-8" (I have one or two such overstamp guns). The SAR-8 was modified to get through customs with an idiotic lump-o-steel on the end of the barrel and a thumbhole stock - but they were still being imported from Greece and basically the same quality as the original SAR-3 (albeit with slightly different features and a new numerical designation to get through customs). Springfield later introduced the US made SAR-8 with an aluminum receiver - total piece of crap.

If you can get a steel receiver Springfield SAR (SAR-3, SAR-8, or overstamp gun) thats a great price, but especially if its an original SAR-3. If its an aluminum receiver, I'd stay away.

Is there a way to tell if it's a steel or aluminum receiver?

Yeah.... I know it's a stupid question....

If it helps, the gun is heavy as hell.

Yep - check the manufacturer/importer's info on the mag well and look for the following terms: EBO, Greece, Hellenic Arms. If its a steel receiver, it should have one of those terms in addition to the Springfield name to indicate it was made in Greece and imported.
