I have the opportunity to purchase one of the reproductions for $500, but I wanted to check with you guys to see if these could handle the higher grain loads? 500-525 grains to be exact. Or should I just go for one of the Marlin Lever-action .45-70s? I really like the look and action of the Springfield though.

Origianal trapdoors were loaded with 500 gr bullets. Never load hot loads in a trapdoor. Question is why do you what the 45-70 for?

The Trapdoor is a great, historic rifle. The Marlin has a stronger receiver in which you can shoot a high powered load.

As I recall, just about any Garrett cartridge can be fired in a Marlin; not so with the Trapdoor.
