Springfield XD for IDPA

I'm considering switching to an XD for IDPA. Can't decide between the 4" and 5" barrel length. Any thoughts?

Thought 1: XD will enter in ESP vs 1911 .38 Supers not SSP vs Glocks. Do you care?
Thought 2: I'd get the five inch for the longer sight radius and conventional recoil spring.

Not really..... I want to shoot the gun that ergonomically best fits my hands and my shooting needs. I think I'll be competitive vs. either, after a little time with the XD. At least that is the plan.

I currently shoot a Beretta 92 Centurion. I really like the gun, I also have a 96 Centurion, but don't like the long trigger pull for the first DA shot. After that, I generally hit what I aim at. This is especially troubling for strong hand or weak hand only shots.

springfield 9mm 1911 makes a good IDPA gun...
the 9 round mags dont seem to hurt in idpa.
USPSA has the provisional single stack division coming out soon(january 2K6)

If you get a chance, try a CZ75 with a trigger job done by USPSA GRANDMASTER Angus Hobdell, www.ghostholster.com
super sweet legal for IDPA and USPSA...
you can shoot it cocked and locked or da/sa
they can get about 4.5 pound DA and 1.7 pound SA and its slick as glass.
about 600 dollars with mags.

How many malfunctions have you had? I've put thousands of rounds through mine and it has been reliable.

I've got the four incher. It just seems to balance better for me than the five inch. I have shot it in IDPA ESP competition and occasionally in USPSA Production competition. It is also probably my favorite carry gun.

I've bought two and still shoot a Tactical and have never had a malfunction nor seen anyone who has one have a malfunction. What have you seen?

at the USPSA handgun nationals there was a guy in our squad who was shooting a 5inch XD 9mm. there was also a guy shooting a glock 34. the XD gunner was shooting winchester factory ammo, the glock guy was shooting his handloads.

the glock never missed a beat in the 500 round match.
the XD guy had to borrow a gun to finish.

the xd was chambering a round but not recocking itself...kinda odd.


in over 10 different XDs shooting factory ammo(win white box, rem-umc, cci blzer(brass and aluminum)) i have seen failures to feed, failures to extract, failures to eject and then you get the odd ones, the failures to recock the pistol.

there have also been reports of extractors failing due to soft/defective material

these have been all high round count pistols used almost exclusively in USPSA competition.

so just remember take care of you weapons and they will take care of you

at the IDPA event I was at this weekend the only problem I saw was from a sig 220 yes a Sig

Why would he be DQed? As long as the RM OKed the new gun he would be fine. I've seen this done several times.


5.1.7 Competitors must use the same handgun and type of sights for all
courses of fire in a match. However, in the event that a competitor’s
original handgun and/or sights become unserviceable or
unsafe during a match, the competitor must, before using a substitute
handgun and/or sights, seek permission from the Range
Master who may approve the substitution provided he is satisfied:
5.1.7.1 The substitute handgun satisfies the requirements of the relevant
Division.
5.1.7.2 In using the substitute handgun the competitor will not gain
a competitive advantage.
5.1.7.3 The competitor’s ammunition, when tested in the substitute
handgun attains the minimum power factor using the match
chronograph (see Rule 5.6.3.9).

I guess this is open to interpetation. I have seen replacement guns use in a match, but they were of the same type/model. Such as a XD being replaced by an XD. Not an XD being replaced by a Glock. Even though they're both production.
