Yea my 11-day wait period is over and I finally got my XD40! Wish I could go out and shoot it this weekend, but I already have plans for something else.

I'm a novice. It's my first handgun. For home defense, my first weapon is my Mossberg 500 shotgun.

I plan on cleaning it and familiarizing myself with the features, safety, etc. I have two boxes of ammo. One for home defense and one for target practice.

This XD package came with two magazines, a bullet guide thingy, a holster, lock and cord, brush and case.

Any advice/recommendations for this newbie?

Yup. Buy ammo, shoot ammo, repeat. :D

Seriously, just go shoot the thing. So many people get drawn into customizing, tweaking, upgrading, but never get around to actually putting rounds downrange. Don't be one of those guys.:)

Congrats on the new pistol - I love the XD line. I'll be picking up an XD-9 as soon as finances allow.

More magazines and a better holster.

Shoot shoot shoot. And don't be tempted to customize this gun until you're thoroughly familiar with it (and not even then, IMHO).

I'm a novice. It's my first handgun.

Take a class. Get some instruction.

Years back I took an intro to pistol class from Midwest Training Group. Quite an eye opener. Handgun shooting is a whole body activity, and there are a lot of details about grip and stance that make a big difference. Never would have got that on my own.

Gee, that must S***!

Congrats. I really like my XD SC .40. Now we need a range report and some pics. :D

Go shoot it, and shoot it, and......

Congrats on the purchase. A new firearm is a beautiful thing! - and like they said - post pics.

But you need more ammo. Two boxes aint going to cut it. you need to send a few hundred rounds through it to break it in. And whatever you're going to use for home defense, you need to put a few boxes of that through it to make sure there are no issues. I know the good stuff is expensive but you've already taken the first big step towards peace of mind, take that next step further so that if you need it, you're 100% confident that what you send through it isn't going to mess up. Classes wouldn't hurt either.

Go shoot, have fun, be careful, and post some pics!

Thanks for all your valuable feedback! Yes I do intend to shoot, shoot, and shoot until I'm comfortable with it.

I will be signing up for a two-day class in September to go over the basics and the laws of carrying a handgun.

I won't be customizing it. I've been lurking around here before I made my decision and it looks like it's best to leave it as it is.

The 11-day wait in Cali seemed long, but I kept myself busy here researching. Pics to come!

congrats, what a great choice you have there, i have 2 xd's and i love em both, i wouldn't trade em for a gold monkey, or big foot for that matter.

haha, if i weren't busy upgrading my sites and preparing for the weekend, I'd be practicing right now, lol. How lucky that you have two XDs.

Just back from the range during my lunch break. I was pleasantly surprised at the easy recoil and accuracy of the Springfield.

I've been to the range before to shoot my shotgun, but I have never ever shot a handgun before. Here are my results and pics of my XD40 right after shooting. Shot a box of 50 rounds.

Just have to clean her up when I get home.

I think after my initial nervousness died down then the pattern got a little tighter, lol

Just need more practice.

glad you like it. i thought that you would. maybe my computer is acting funny but i can't seem to see the pics that you posted.

Pics work for me. Nice gun, thats not bad shooting esp for a beginner. What distance were those shots taken?
The XDs are nice guns, I like my XD9 alot.

A couple hundred more rounds and you should become more comfortable and have learned the pistol better too.

25 yards looked kinda far. I was thinking, hmmm can I even hit the target, lol :banghead: Guess my Lasik surgery paid off :)

25 yards, that is not bad at all for a beginner. I don't think I can shoot that at 25 yards... Not that I'm great or anything (obviously).

I really tried to mix it up. First set took my time. Second set of ammo fired quickly and last set for accuracy. If the weather is cool next week, I'll go out again.

The range I go to by work is outdoors, but covered. If I could hit it at 25 yards, anyone can :)

Yea at 25yds thats not bad at all.

The longer the distance you try to shoot, the more area the sight will cover on the target, making it more difficult to place good shots. Come back in to about 10yds. You'll have a better sight picture on the target and will probly be surprised at the grouping you can get. Then you can work your way back to longer shots.

I wish I could go closer or farther. This range only has the one distance at 25 yards. I have to stay behind the wall and before the yellow line they have. I'll ask if they have another area closer or farther ;)
