SPYDERCO DODO

It's a politically correct world we live in and small knives are 'in'.

They're ideal for daily carry and ordinary cutting jobs but, by virtue of their little stature, lack the strength and cutting power to tackle unexpected big jobs. (Continued in link above...)

Yadayadayada.

Excuse me while I puke.

OK, let me offer my take:

A 4" class folder is almost always street-legal, and will be the same size. Even a 3" class is an improvement over this "sheeple friendly" oversize blue turd :scrutiny:.

If you DO have "sheeple nearby" problems, you need to carry a keychain-class critter like a Leatherman Micra or Swisstech Utilikey or whatever. It won't take up the bulk of the "gelded blue wonder" :barf: and will leave room for a REAL knife artfully concealed.

OK?

LOL.
I couldn't have said it better.
Small knives have thier place. Work knife ain't it, IMO. I'd rather have a box cutter than an overpriced box cutter.
Cutting power. It all comes down to cutting power.
Try a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande (6 inch blade). I've had mine 4 years now. I've sawn boards with it. Not most of the time, but more than once or twice.
It's held up real well. $89.
Or a Cold Steel Pro Lite Folder. 4inch blade, $50.
How much is the doo doo? I mean Dodo?
'Course, all this is just my opinion. A lot of folks don't like Cold Steel, think they're pieces of crap. All I know is my experience. Been using them about 6 years without a failure.

Ill go at this from the supportive collumn. 99% of the time I scoff at and dont worry about political correctness, but occasionally its nice. I used one of these off a bladeforums passaround, and thought it was perfect for the times I had to go to my sisters school and was prohibited from any blades larger than 2.5 inchs. The dodo fills the hand perfectly, while keeping under the 2.5 limit. It is also a fairly innocent knife, which was nice in the school environment. Now most fo the time I carry 3 and 4 inch scary looking folders, but sometimes i want a less scary knife, and more than my juice or squirt. If you get a chance to handle a dodo, do so, you might be surprised.

I am not familiar with that exact knife, but I have a very small Spyderco Knife that I use for a money clip. The people posting above arn't using their immaginations. This small Spyderdo is just ONE knife I am carrying. And, if some situation dictated that I not scare the sheeple, I have the option of using this knife as opposed to my other knife.

The Dodo isn't nearly as day-glow blue as it appears it the above picture. It's far more royal/dark blue.

That's a Surefire E2e for size comparison. Despite its detractors here, the Dodo is a good knife. It'll cut boxes and other items just like a little claw and is so 'friendly' I've never had anyone scream and run away while I was using it (even over here).

The Dodo is almost pancake flat and rides very low in the pocket which makes it very discreet. However, it's quite wide so you might have a little trouble reaching items below it in the pocket. It's very ergonomic and fits my hand like a glove; though other experience may differ (I have small hands). The textured G10 helps to lock the knife in the grip.

You just have to ask yourself what you want your knife to do, and get one accordingly. The Dodo won't saw boards, but it'll tackle other everyday tasks well. The pointy tip helps with delicate work too.

A word of warning though, despite it's premium steel (S30V), the knife will need sharpening eventually, and you'll have to practice a bit to sharpen the curves effectively (i.e.: without rounding off the point).

I puchased one of these for my collection and threw it in the drawer after admiring the craftsmanship and sharpness. I promply forgot about it until I had to take a nine day trip to a city with a blade length law. It came down to carrying this Dodo or a Cricket. I chose the Dodo and the rest is history. This is now one of my favorite EDC knives.

The blade shape is way more useful than it looks. The thing cuts like a laser and it easy to keep sharp with the Sharpmaker. I love the way it rides in the pocket and feels in the hand. Tripping the lock takes some getting used to but after time you can collapse it one-handed no problem.

I highly recommend this knife. Pictures don't do the trick. You really must handle and use one for a few days to "get it". :)

Just another note for the pro-Dodo camp. As others have mentioned, the Dodo has the most ergonomic grip of any knife I've ever held--I truly cannot imagine it getting forced out of my hand for any reason. It's also equally comfortable in forward or reverse grip.

Also, the Dodo has the silkiest, smoothest release I've experienced. I'm sure there are other knives equally smooth or smoother, but the Dodo tops the list of those I've handled. It's literally open before you realize it.

On a personal downside, I like IWB carry (midway between the belt buckle and the right pocket), and the Dodo grip is so aggressively textured, it actually chafes the skin under my shirt. So for me, this knife is better for pocket carry, or with multiple layers of clothing!

As mentioned previously, the Dodo makes a respectable option for municipalities with severely restrictive blade length statutes.

I'll chime in with support for the DoDo.

Good ergonomics.
Good blade shape for day to day urban/suburban/rural cutting tasks.
Secure grip.
Excellent materials and construction.

My criticism is that the price is a little high for the knife and that it will probably not spend much time in the Spyderco lineup due to fact that most people don't like a blade significantly smaller than the handle (in spite of the advantages). Oh yeah, they should make it in black and in red.

I feel strongly either way . . .

I agree that bigger blades are preferable. I customarily pocket either a Camillus CUDA Maxx (yep, my EDC) or (when I'm legally packing a revolver in my right front pants pocket) a Spyderco Civilian.

On the other hand, I occasionally (and under protest) must travel to D.C. and Chicago. Due to tight blade length restrictions in those areas, I carry a DoDo. Its blade offers a lot more slashing potential than appearances would indicate, and it draws and opens really quickly.

Not equal to my bigger blades, but lots better than nothing at all.:D

Dont get me wrong, I love my big blades too, and I usually have my 710 or 941ti clipped to the front pocket, with a native or hawk dog clipped to the back. The exception is when Im in blade size restricted areas, and I never feel quite comfortable with my little navigator being my knife. Which is why the dodo is on my shopping list to pick up this summer. It carries great, and that little blade has a lot more cutting power than it seems. I too, was making fun of this knife after seeing the picture, but after carrying one via a bladeforums passaround I was sold on the idea.
