Squib load

I once experienced the same exact problem and it was because of an undercharge

In order: 1. Because people make mistakes. I am, as of the last check, still a member of that classification. A total cartridge weight check is a QC double-check. It's not sufficient by itself. It can be a useful backstop.

2. So that the final weight of the cartridge has meaning (see prior post)! And so that if problems manifest with a particular brand/headstamp of brass, it's easy to segregate both loaded and unloaded cases with that brass.

It strikes me as a horrible waste of time. If it works for you, great, but thats certainly not for me.

ljnowell, I get the sense that you're a little less risk-averse than I am. But I'm not trying to reload at fastest-possible safe speed. I'm reloading, in part, to unwind after a long day. If I load 30 rounds in 45 minutes, I'm ok with that. I enjoy the process.

I wouldnt say that I am willing to take risks, I am just very comfortable with the way I reload. I am satisfied that I do not have critical errors in my process.

For example, I only use certain powders that will meter through my powder measure perfectly. I visually examine every case before a bullet goes on it. After seating every primer I pull the case off the shell holder and feel it for proper depth, etc. I still manage to comfortable load 150-200 rounds an hour on my turret press that way.

I do sort brass sometimes. My bullseye loads in 38 special for examply. I weigh the bullets and sort them into three groups based on weights(very small differences) and only use the middle weight(most common) for comps, the others are relegated to practice loads. Cases are sorted by headstamp, I only use one, and it has to be a certain case of that headstamp. I only use the winchester cases that do not have a canalure. In my experience weighing them with or without the canalure the cases have a different weight. I only use a single primer(because of my comp gun). I can be anal, when I need to be.

When it comes to 45acp though, scrape em all up, tumble them, and load them, lol. We all have our own methods. If it works for you, go for it.

One thing for sure better none or to little than to much other than a hurt ego its a easy fix much better than a double charge .Thats why we must pay 100 percent attention when reloading. Its easy to get a bullet out of a barrel its not easy to fix a blow up gun.Its not the end of the world but a good reminder for all.
