Squirrel Hunting Tips

I find my S@w 500 works the best when squirrel hunting dead accurate and even if you miss the percussion of the bullet kills them anywaysm

Seriously think of deer season running with squirrel season. Old farts just taking it easy, not in a hurry, didn't bring much gear and what they did, same old stuff they have used for twenty, thirty, forty, fifty years sometimes.
Seasoned folks, just a break from work, if retired a break from raising feet when momma wants to vacuum, or - more important I guess - time to pass forward- no hustle and bustle.
Momma going to fuss about weight and what they eat anyway, and momma knows old fart is going to have fun and eat too much stuff he is not supposed to. Then again one reason they have stayed married so long - they banter back and forth and don't take none of it serious.
Young bunch heads out - finally. Liked to have not got "all that newfangled stuff" packed in the first place, won't all fit in the cabin and new smells can be smelt into the next county.
Ah...finally, everyone left, just the old farts and maybe some grandkids. Sitting in chairs, sipping coffee, quiet tones, telling jokes "bang" and showing the grankids some stuff "bang" ...this continues for a bit,"bang" never really getting up, or moving too fast - to far.
Young bunch comes back, empty handed "but ...but" full of stories. Old farts listen, grandkids too as they clean that big ol' mess of squirrels.
I don't care how many points a buck had that got away...
..., the grin on a grandkids face taking squirrels with "his" new to him "old rifle" just beats all.

I've found wind can play hob with about any hunting especially squirrel. If your part of Eastern Tenn is the typical mountain type terrain like it is around here look for a deep bowl-shapped hollow with nut trees. Since the wind can't rake the area, squirrels will work on the ground in that kind of location and shun the rest. If it's a small one you can set on a ridge or 1/2 way up one side. They never seem to figure out the threat is above them. It's been my general observation the colder the day, the later they get cranked up.
For late season if you can find a corn field with some tall stubble or even standing unharvested corn with a stand of trees on one or more sides you're set. For that matter if there are any of the old slat-type corn cribs that actually have corn in them on the land you hunt every squirrel in the area will know about them. They seem to come at all hours of the day.
