Squirrel & rabbit cooking Recipes

Start a slow cooker on high with several quarts of water and a couple of squirrels and cook until the meat can be deboned; about two hours. Debone and add back to the cooker with all the juice, but then added 1 or 2 cans of chicken soup. I like Progresso. Add a can of corn, 2 cans of creamed sweet corn, 1 can of carrots, 1 can of green beans; add one diced large onion. Pepper mill to taste. (salt optional). The soup has enough salt for me. Depending on the number of people you are serving, you can add more items, just like the story of "Stone Soup." My wife has added dark beans and my brother likes hot chillies and red pepper.

Does anyone here hunt & eat crows?
My brother shot a crow on a bet while goose hunting in Texas. He told the better he would eat it cause he doesn't kill things for the heck of it. It was flying around while hunting and someone bet him $20 he couldn't hit it at 60 yards. He did and plucked it and gutted it and put in Shake and Bake and ate it and said it was very good. It was a young crow...very tender. He did say older ones can be as tough as nails, but never told me how he knew this.

I've always heard you're supposed to wait until after the first freeze to eat rabbits.I don't know if that's true or not but I trust that theory. How I can tell is if theres an R in the name of the Month. If there is it's safe to eat a rabbit during that time.Actually anywhere from October-March is technically when I do some rabbit eatin cause that's when rabbit season is in Oklahoma so I'm missin out on a couple of R months but you get the idea.

The only way I've ever eatin rabbit was battered and fryed and served with mashed potatoes and gravy.I'm not really sure about squirrels though.
I think it's more after the Frost there are less ticks and fleas on them.

All great recipes, keep them coming.

I really would like to get some rabbit but Love a are slim these days nd if there's heavy snow some nice state land spots there's nowhere to park. The hawks, owls, foxes, coyote, really drop there numbers way down. I don't like hunting with dogs if I did have one to use.

Rabbit season is open year-round in Florida with a bag limit of 8 at least .. maybe more. They change everything so often here it is hard to keep track. However, I have never even seen 8 rabbits in a season here as foxes (unlawful to hunt any time), coyotes, hawks, eagles, bobcats and every other carnivore eat them before I see one.

Another issue is Bot Flies.

They lay their eggs in the skin of animals and the larva grow under the skin with a snorkel sticking out of the hole to breathe. It's gross but it doesn't hurt the meat, just grosses out some people and they might throw the animal away. Once it frosts once or twice the adult flies go away and the last larva hatch, then you don't have that issue.

Up in Broome County the one piece of property we hunted squirrels at was next to a horse farm. Early in the season (September) the squirrels there had the bot fly grubs. After theyexited the squirrels the hair at that spot would be really short.
That was the only are that I came across that problem.
