St. Louis was rated the Most Dangerous city in the United States by Morgan Quitno Press, a private research and publishing company of state and local referance books. Detroit, Flint MI, and Compton, CA were next on the list.

How do you think your town or city would rate? (The article I read didn't break down the crime stats - just overall rating).

Do CCW laws have an affect on crime ststs?

"Richmond ranked less dangerous in survey" - morning headline

We dropped from 5th all the way to 15th.

"We worked hard to bring those numbers down." - Police Chief Monroe

Not hard enough, since D.C. is 19th.

Since CCW has been legal in STL for a few years, I am guessing CCW has made little to no difference in MO's crime stats. At the same time, the people doing the crime aren't permitholders, either.

Keep in mind, though, that becuase STL is a geographical freak (St. Louis City is NOT in St. Louis County; it is a County unto its own self), it had none of its suburbs included in the calculations. Other cities did, and those 'burbs helped dilute the rankings.

Still, I try to avoid going into the "Loo" unarmed.

haha, i was born and raised in flint and have lived in detroit (near 8 mile) for almost 7 years now.
and i only carry my la-griffe... ishould probly reconsider a carry weapon. haha

"St. Louis City is NOT in St. Louis County; it is a County unto its own self"

It's the same in Virginia. We have independent cities and towns.
The City of Richmond is not part of the surrounding counties - Henrico and Chesterfield.

Doesn't surprise me in the least St. Louis finally made it to the top of the list . The animals have pretty much ruled there and have been spreading to the surrounding county municipalities since the 60's , U City , Jennings , Pagedale , Kinloch have all been under their control for a long time with Berkly , Spanish Lake , Overland , St John , Florissant and many others slipping fast or have already fallen . Thanks to the government in all of the racial integration wisdom and building housing projects even otherwise nice areas in St. Charles and beyond are soon to be doomed .

When I tried to pull the page up, it said I was not authorized to view this page~!

But, I imagine the large metro area of Birmingham, AL would certainly
make the "TOP 10" in the survey.:uhoh: This has become one dangerous town, with one police officer shot to death on Oct. 23rd in Fairfield, and
just late last evening another PO was stabbed several times in Norwood;
which is located in North Birmingham. Birmingham PD officers are under
staffed and under paid, in relation too other major U.S. cities~!:cuss:

Here is the another link to the complete list, not broken down by population.

I live near and been in the 2004 and 2005 winner Camden NJ and I have stayed in St Louis for 2 days back about 6 years ago. ST. Louis must have gotten really bad, really quick. Camden is a war zone, plan and simple. People from Tough neighborhoods in Philly (which is right across the Delaware River) don't like going into Camden. The city of St Louis seemed nice when I was there, but when we wanted to see the Arch the lady at the hotel told our group not to go on the other side of this one bridge (forget the name), apparently that was East St Louis, and that is was a BAD area.

Fwiw east st louis is actually in illinois since its across the river obviously. According to the 2004 UCR it has a murder rate of 63.4 per 100k putitng it above camden nj, detroit, dc, st louis, etc. Its prudent advice. I also think calling st louis the most dangerous city may be somewhat misleading.

The statistics didn't include those inner ring or middle ring suburbs. The point is, if they had, STL would have looked safer (yes, even had they included Kinloch). I don't think this has anything to do with racial integration- there's no need to play that card. It is about people with no respect for others, and there's plenty of those in any ethnic group.

I am a nearby Camden resident also. Lonestar.. where are you?

Camden moved down on the list because nobody goes there any more... less targets!:what: Camden infuriates me becuase it would be a great place to turn around the perfect view of Philadelhia's nighttime city skyline. But even the city politicos dont want a turn around, they would rather rule the "uber poor" (their term not mine) then allow gentrification, influx of new blood and a loss of a power base.

Soybomb...what is your reasoning behind the thought that calling St. Louis the #1 is misleading?

Maybe it's like Richmond, if you avoid certain neighborhoods and certain people (drug dealers/users) it's relatively safe.

Then again, I grew up in Baltimore and D.C. and almost everywhere I go appears to be relatively safe. :)

John

JohnBT, I think that's pretty much it.

The vast majority of places, so long as you are cautious about where you go and whom you meet, you will be just fine. Most crime is perpetrated on criminals- while the wolves do prey on the sheep and tangle with the sheepdogs, they usually just tear each other to shreds. In St. Louis, if you are in the O'Fallon Park neighborhood hanging out with drug dealers, you might well have a bad time. If you are with law abiding folk at a Cardinals game or at Ted Drewes' Frozen Custard, you will most likely have a very enjoyable time.

I note that my hometown of Tulsa is ranked 335th safest, while neighboring suburb Broken Arrow is ranked 20th safest. A large percentage of BA residents work and shop daily in Tulsa, thus are partly exposed to the same crime risks.

I suspect this is true of other places on the list, too.

Did anyone else notice on the FBI's list that there were no cities from Illinois listed at all, anywhere on the list?

Ah I see Orlando hit 7th. Its funny when I was kid Orlando was little more than Disney World, hotels, restaurants and parking lots surrounded by orange groves. And that wasn't even that long ago. Now it is fast become a North American Rio de Janeiro.

On a side not the article lists Miami Gardens as number 6. Miami Springs is little more than a neighborhood, in Miami-Dade County, with possibly its own post office and I don't think it really belongs in that list.

Cities

I found it odd that "Daley Land" was not on the list. I found Birmingham and Nashville on the lists. I guess that means I better be on my guard. :scrutiny:

Our city was rated the safest in the country two years in a row, but we got bumped down to fourth place because a murder happened last year.

It was a hired killing, a guy wanted his ex-wife's boyfriend killed. What bugged me is that neither of the guilty parties, nor the victim, live in our town, the victim happened to work here. I feel like our town got unfairly smeared with this :cuss:

We have essentially the lowest crime rate for a city over 70k people. But it really isn't that low, compared to some places.

Japan has literally 1% of the assault rate of the USA.

We've got a very serious crime problem here, and as far as I can tell handguns don't make much difference, either in terms of crimes committed with them or self-defense using them. The roots of violence go much deeper, there is something screwed up in our society.

We seem to have a large percentage of kids who are raised to think that hitting, assaulting, robbing, or other violent acts are acceptable behavior. What gives?

Heck Oakland came in 8th. How can we out here in Ca
expect Jerry Brown to do a good job policing the state,
if the city he is suppose to be leading comes in 8th as
the most dangerous city to live in ? As a matter of
fact, last yr Oakland was lower in rankings..What
gives ?

Not surprising though. What can one expect from a guy
who appointed Rose Byrd to the Ca Supreme Court ?
She only voted NO regarding the DP on all 61 capitol
punishment cases before her.
How's that for justice..

Sorry to go off topic, but more should know Brown is NOT
the answer for Ca's Atty Gen.

Here is another list that shows all the cities.

For those interested in Chicago, look under "missing cities"
