Stag Grips...

I just got my first set of stag for an Officer's 1911.

Where do you get the bit to put the mediallion in?

Forstner Bit

Where do you get the bit to put the mediallion in?

I use a 1/2" Forstner Bit for both Colt and Ruger Medallions, and 25/64" one for S&W medallions. The 1/2" one is easy to find at about any building supply store. The 25/64" is more difficult...see them on ebay upon occassion.

Also, a drill press comes in handy unless your hand is steadier than mine!

Do you realize how many stags had to die just to make your guns pretty?

(yes, I am kidding. But am I pretty upset about people killing naughas for their hydes.)

As I understand it, the stag antlers that are used to make grips are "shed". If I have been misinformed by the seller, please tell me so, and I can have a conversation with him about integrity in sales. If I have been properly advised, no stag ever died for my grips.

Cocked&Locked, great pics!!!! brings a tear to my eye!!!!
BTW, Do you install medallions on other people's grips? Let's say, S&W meds on a pair of Ahrends for a snubby? Pls let me know.

Are these grips in the pictures Sanbar Stag or whitetail? I was on a hunt for some of the Sanbar Stag grips for my 1911 but in the search I found that the US doesn't allow import of them any longer and whats here is very expensive.

What I did find, as suggested by another poster on this forum, was Eagelgrips.com. I bought some Elk grips that look nearly as good and the shape fills out my hand better.

Cocked and Locked, I particularly like those first three pictures of yours, what type of horn is that?

Colt 1911 w/ stag grips

These are pictures of my Colt WWI reproduction with stag grips, laying on top of one of my leather hunting journals. For many years, I have maintained a series of hunting journals for my daughter and my future grandchildren. The journals add "emotional value" to the firearms' monetary value that she will inherit. I submit that the emotional value far exceeds the monetary value of the firearms themselves.

Nice Pics!

Great! I'm not the only one that likes them! Nice looking guns and pics!

As to what they are, the ones in the first pic on the shiny 1911 are Sambar Stag

The second and third pics of the plain grips, then with the medallions installed and on Colt LWC are European Red Stag

The three Ruger Single Actions have Elk, Sambar Stag, and Elk...in that order.

The remaining S&W revolvers are all Sambar Stag.

This S&W 39-2 is Sambar Stag

This Ruger SBH is also Sambar Stag

As to installing medallions in grips for other, I do so at times but prefer not to...too much resposibility!
