Stampede vs Vaquero

I have a blue/color case hardened 5.5" Vaquero .44 and a polished Nickel 5.5" .45 Colt Stampede... The Ruger is certaily sturdier, but also bulkier and heavier.
But you are comparing the Old Vaquero to the Stampede.

The new Vaqueros are smaller and lighter. And also not suitable for .44 Magnum.

I saw in the latest American Rifleman that Ruger proofed the New Vaquero with the same loads as the Old Vaquero, now thats not to say it would be wise to shoot higer pressure loads out of it ALOT, but it seems it could handle it from their information.

Sometimes proofing isn't proof.

Proof loads are caliber specific and are a certain % over SAAMI maximum. Therefore all .357 revolvers, regardless of manufacturer are proofed with the same loads.
Just as all .44 Magnum handguns are proofed with the same loads.

The Colt SAA in .45 Colt is factory proofed with the same loads as the Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt. But it's generally accepted as fact that the Ruger is stronger.

Those Ruger/Contender loads in the manuals often exceed SAAMI levels.
Which is why I have said for over 20 years that SAAMI should establish an official .45Colt +P standard.

This thread ws a real interest to me for two reasons. One, my wife just bought me a blued Stampede 4 3/4 .45 colt and I love it. I don't like the plastic grips - they look nice but are fitted to the frame at the bottom very well and have ordered the wooden grips.

I am so new to SA shooting my cord hasn't been cut yet. I am now looking at the new vaquero as a stable mate if I can get one up here at a decent price. May even go stainless.

As far as the Stampede goes I do like the clicks they are sharpe. The transfer bar allows for six loaded chambers which is great. Fit and finsih is first class. Just getting used to the trigger - man do all SA go off with so little effort? I guess I will have to educate my trigger finger for a third tyoe of trigger. LOL

What are you guys thoughts on the 5 1/2 barrel over the 4 5/8 - 3/4 barrelled guns?

My Ruger Bisley Vaquero...

is an "old" model in Stainless with a 5 1/2" barrel chambered in .357magnum. I handled the Colt Cowboy, the USFA Rodeo, and a Uberti before I even touched a Ruger, and I bought the Vaquero...
I never had a problem loading or unloading, and it hits where I aim...I did think about buying the 45LC, but when I seen the price of a box of fifty, I decided on the .357...as I can shoot a hundred 38 wadcutters for the price of a box of fifty 45LC.

Only thing I want to do to it is "wipe the disclaimer" off the barrel...

As I understand it those aren't plastic... they're 'hard rubber' which came with the original Colt SAA's. All my second gen Colts have 'em, as does my USFA SAA.

Page 83 of the Sept 2005 American Rifleman has a really good closeup of Tom Horn's old Colt, showing the grips. Wood is nicer is many ways, and of course that's 'authentic' as well. But black hard rubber grips have a long and honorable history on these revolvers. :)

I've never handled a Beretta Stampede, but I've owned a 4 3/4" Ruger Vaquero .357 Magnum for over seven years. I love mine and have never had any issues with it. It's built like a tank, shoots to point of aim, and looks good.

On a side note, for many years I was completely unaware that the frame size of the old Vaquero was some 20% larger than the original Colts after which it was modeled, instead I only marveled at how some people could twirl those heavy pieces so easily. Then this past summer I happened to handle a Colt clone manufactired by God knows who and remarked to the clerk how much lighter it was than the Vaquero. It was then that I learned.

Now I'm getting the urge for a "new" Vaquero. :(

My 357 Stampede has been an excellent firearm. Accurate and the blue color looks very good. Close to 1000 rounds through her and no problems.
