Standard vs magum primers. I'm going to find out for myself.

Something I've always thought when using different primers is the difference in thickness is used to show different pressure, ie, spp flattens out at a lower pressure than spm, showing the first pressure sign to the reloader, if you use srp it wouldn't show pressure signs till 55k or more, WAY to much for most handguns. Trying different primers than what is listed just please be careful.

I have not pierced them with the hottest 357 loads and I would not expect to. I have found that they ignite very well with full loads of N105 or N110

Just the person I'm looking for that's using the same components I'm going to. I have the dies and everything setup to load 357 Mag on my Dillon XL750. I chose Hornady XTP/HP 158gr. and chose Vihtavouri N105 for my powder. In these crazy times, I cannot find small pistol magnum primers, I only have regular small pistol primers...will these work?

Vihtavouri N105 is a really slow burning powder and a flake type powder. Will a standard small pistol primer work? Maybe depending on powder temperature but the N 105 really needs a magnum primer for good complete ignition. Early VihtaVouri data actually suggested a Winchester WSR primer for the N105 powder loaded into a 357 Remington Magnum cartridge.

While I can understand with shortages it is difficult for us to optimize load data but in this case I would recommend against anything other than a magnum primer. That or try a CCI #41 or other SRM primer as long as your gun can hit them hard enough.

N-105 in a .38 Super case. It's a short thin stick powder. I used a SRP because that is what I use on high pressure .38 Super loads, but standard primers will likely work just fine. If you have both standard and mag small pistol primers you can always try both.

I just snooped around the VihtaVuori site. They seem to specify primer size based on the cartridge and not the powder. All 357mag loads have magnum primers specified. I did find a 38 Super load using N-105, and regular primers were specified.

On another note, they have updated their load database and now have data for Berry’s, Speer, and Xtreme plated bullets.

I use N105 in 357 and have found that it needs a magnum primer, load to the upper end and a heavy crimp to get it to burn some what clean..
