I've got a Star Model "A" in 9mm Largo.

I'm wondering about the possibility of carrying the thing. It seems to be reliable and its in a decent caliber. Of course it's bigger and more awkword than my Makarov, so I'd probably only carry it when I can "open" carry it, like when I'm out hunting or something... the rest of the time I'd just stick with the Mak...

Anyway, I'd like to know if it would be safe to carry this thing "cocked and locked". It doesn't have a grip safety, and I'm not sure if it's "drop safe", so I really don't know if carrying it would be a good idea. I need more info...

Also, I'd like to know what you guys think about the 9mm Largo round, and if any of you reload, what kind of loads would you recomend?

Oh, and please don't recomend that I get a different gun, I don't have the money for that right now :(

I see no problems in carrying it. 9MM Largo is plentiful also. I really don't know if I could justify the expense of reloading for it. Those old Stars are solid and reliable. Drop safe? I wouldn't bet on it. The only issue for me would be having it checked over by a gunsmith, detail stripped and any worn parts replaced. Where can you get extra mags for them? I feel that the Star A with three mags would make a good pistol, even for CCW. Why not look for a 1911 IWB holster?

I don't think that Star had an inertia firing pin. So cocked and locked would be a must. The firing pin can be reconfigured to or replaced with the inertia type.

Put an empty cartridge case with a live primer in it and smack the livinghell out of the muzzle with a rubber mallet. That will let you know it it's drop safe or not.

The Star thumb safety is more secure than Colt, it blocks the hammer directly instead of the sear. I would not worry about carrying it cocked and locked, if in good shape.
