Well the model s I was so hopping to get is gone so I been looking around and no shops around has any so I look at classic arm and aim surplus at a star model super b 9mm I like that its a 9mm better but how good of pistol is it. I know its alittle bigger then the model s but how is it internally? I am just looking to get one to take out and shoot and maybe keep in my night stand thanks

A link to upgrade details and differences between the Star b and Super b. I have had a Star b for about ten years, it is about 9/10's the size of a government 1911.. I would buy the Super over the earlier b just because of the improvement they made in field strip. There are better sights and improvements to the internals.

These are rugged all steel pistols. Shot from a rest mine is quite accurate, but it's not reliable enough except as a range gun. It has good ergonomics except that the hammer will bite the web of your hand if you have meaty hands or hold too high on the grip. Having the hammer bobbed would eliminate this.

My biggest complaint is the trigger, mine is inconsistant and otherwise poor. I suspect that this my individual pistol since the reviews I have read report OK triggers.

You mentioned using the gun for the range and possibly for the night stand. Might I recommend the Makarov PM pistol from Russia or Bulgaria. or the CZ82 from Czechoslovakia. Both of these pistols are more reliable, smaller and the CZ has a greater mag capacity. These will also be surplus and in the same price range as the Star. The CZ 82 and The Makarov PM will use 9mm Makarov, both are available in .380 as well.... Just a thought.

This is my b. I found the grips on ebay.

Parts can be an issue because the company has been out of business for so long. But I have not had trouble finding ordinary parts like springs and firing pins.

Google the... Spanish Pistol Forum, for lots of info.

I have both a B and a Super B. I like the Super better because of the quick take down feature.

I have fairy small hand so I dont see that be a problem for me . I like the cz 82 I been looking and looking dor one and I cant find any on any website or locally I found the polish random and pm easy to find but I cant find 9x18 makarov no where locally and for my first one I like to have some I can get ammo locally. I have completely make my mind up. I like the ttc but there again I cant find ammo locally thanks

I have a Model B Super, built in 1947. Came on the original box, with a dated target from the factory. Trigger runs about 5#, and has some creep. The gun has been reliable with Ball, and most JHP, just not the really aggressive profiles. Holds under 3" @15 yards with aging eyes. The sights are typical for WWII-era handguns, as well.

Why, if you're talking night stand gun, would a smaller gun be important? The 9x18 and the 9x17 aren't nearly as powerful as better 9x19 rounds. The 9x18 is also limited in available bullets, as well. The Makarov is no longer a front line handgun, so it's days of lots of spare parts are numbered.

If you like the B Model, look around for a BM. This is a bit smaller, but still in 9x19. Solid guns.

The main reason I want a star a good friend had one and he past away in Oct of last year and he was like another grandfather to me so and it was a bm in stainless with ivory handles and it was always one I like to see and I been wanting a pistol to shoot and to keep by my bed at lease til I can get me a glock 23 or 19 then it be just for the range. I watch a video on the super b he said that it had some feeding issue because it was original for the 9mm largo that was a larger case i dont know if that the truth or not.

I got mine from AIM Surplus. I picked it up two days ago. It is a big steel pistol that feels good in my hand. Fit and finish are good. It was $239 plus $20 for "handpicked" plus $15 shipping. For $275 it was a good deal, imho. It looks barely used at all. I won't be able to get it to the range until next weekend. I will post more then.

I've got a Super in 9MM Largo. Fantastic gun. High quality, great reliability and good accuracy. It eats standard factory loaded 38 Supers all day with the extra strength Wolff spring I installed. The empties dribble out the side and land at my feet. It throws the empty Largo brass much further, and they seem to have more recoil and muzzle blast.

I also have a little Star .22 pistol. It is a little jewel. I can't say enough good things about Stars.....

I understand you are getting away with 38 Super, but that pistol is not made for those pressures, but HEY, it's your hand, who knows what the next round will do.

Jc, 38 Supers have been loaded to 9X19 pressures for years. Both are loaded to 35-37,000 PSI. Fifty years ago the super featured a 130 gr bullet at 1280-1300 FPS. Todays load from Remington is 124 gr at 1240. There are loads from other makers with a 130 gr at 1200. Some specialty loaders load hotter, I stay away from those.

Some of the Largo ammo I have tested runs just as fast on my chronograph as the super. The CCi aluminum cased stuff ran 1240 with the same 124g bullet.

I'm not risking any anatomical parts by shooting today's weak loaded supers in my Star Super. And before anyone asks, Yes , I had to open the breech face on the slide slightly so the .405 rim on the Super would fit. (Largo, and other 9MMs are .395.)

As is ALWAYS the case with old pistols, replace your springs before shooting!
