I have two jugs of Surplus Pulled Down 4895 I plan on using to reload 147/150gr. fmj surplus bullets, mil. brass for my 308 M1 Garand and M1a and 06 Garand. Mostly for plinking.
What are you guys using for a starting load? I hear 46-47 Surplus are good final loads but what do you start with?

Gerry,

With the light bullets, I would consider 46-47gr of 4895 pulldown powder to be on the light side. I would start at 46gr and work my way up from there.

I have long loaded 46 grains of that very same powder for my Garands, and I'm pretty happy with it. I can't see using 48 grains, it's a waste of powder, it's harder on the brass, the rifle, and my shoulder. You will get more reloads out of your brass with 46 grains too.

.30-06 cartridge
M2 .30cal 152gr FMJ pull down surplus bullets
IMR4895 pull down surplus powder
LC67 twice fired, FL sized
Winchester LR primer

Test rifle: M1 Garand, HRA receiver, LMR barrel (CMP service grade)

46.0gr: 2587.57 fps avg
46.5gr: 2624.60 fps avg
47.0gr: 2667.67 fps avg
47.5gr: 2683.00 fps avg

Being unencumbered by the urge to do extra work, I use the same powder charge wherever possible.

For the M1, I use 45.5grs IMR4895/surplus case/WLR/any bullet 125-173grs (on the mild side)

For the M1A I use 41.5gr IMR4895/surplus case/WLR/any bullet 125-168grs (based on the tried and true 168 match load which gives the nominal 2550-2650FPS).
