I figured I would share one of the responses I received from one of my favorite state representatives. He seems to get it.

Buys, Rep. Vincent <[email protected]>

Dear ,

I appreciate you taking the time to write to your state legislator, regarding such an important topic. While deeply saddened by the events in CT, there is no legislation which will change the hearts of evil. This is a problem of greater magnitude than a gun or a weapon. This is a deeper issue which emanates from what we have progressed to as a society. We will continue to encounter heartbreak such as this as we normalize deviant behavior, continue to erode individual responsibility and devalue human life.

Gun ownership is a right protected by the US constitution, just like the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and all other rights declared in the Bill of Rights. Every US citizen, who has not been stripped of those rights through their own actions and by a course of due process, is granted these freedoms. We cannot choose which sections of the constitution we are going to accept and leave others out. Picking and choosing weakens the whole body proper and challenges the entirety of rights expressed therein.

We have a way prescribed by our constitution to amend our constitution. It is necessary that any conversation relating to the removal of rights guaranteed to U.S. citizens follow this constitutionally prescribed path. To do otherwise is to usurp the protections and limits placed upon government by our founding fathers. If one right can be taken away, or continually weakened year by year, then all the other rights protected by the Constitution and Bill of Rights can be diminished as well.

As an elected official, on Jan 14, 2013 I will take another oath to preserve and protect the constitutions of the US and of our great State of Washington. This is your protection as a citizen of this state and of the US that your government will remain constrained by the rule of law, keeping its authority and power in check, thereby keeping all citizens free and their constitutional rights from being abridged.

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with the families and victims of the recent tragedy. There will always be bad people; just as we must always be willing to stand and fight for good. "We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places." - Eph 6:12

I sincerely thank you for your e-mail and concern. They do not go unheard, or unread. Please continue to fill me in with your ideas and thoughts as we move through the next legislative session.

Respectfully,

Representative Vincent Buys
