Just wanted to pass along some good news. Mississippi senate bill 2426 passed and will become law effective July 1st, 2006. This is the same bill as other "castle doctrine" or carjacker laws in other states. It now gives the right of a home or car owner to shoot a perp if they are trying to gain entry into that home/car while the owner/resident is inside. We don't have to wait, or back off. Legally we can now stand our ground. Just thought I'd pass this along, but would like to hear your comments as well.

Previous MS law did not require waiting or backing off either. The new bill which takes effect July 1 primarily requires the justice system to presume the victim (shooter) to have been in reasonable fear of his life or grave harm, rather than requiring him to prove such. Also, it provides civil immunity when one is aquitted of a criminal offense for the act.

SB 396 just passed in Georgia. Pretty closely mirrors the Miss. legislation. Provides immunity from civil litigation provided the victim is cleared of any criminal wrongdoing. SB 396 will become law unless Sonny Perdue vetoes it (The gov of Georgia is not likely to veto this). This is probably more about tort reform than guns.
