Steel Shot in a Remington 1100

I just got my Dads 1100, 2 3/4", modified choke,pre rem-chokes . Is it safe to shoot steel shot through this gun?

Yes, but I would stick to size #2 or smaller shot. Actually, I would get a Steel Shot barrel with choke tubes. In fact, i did.

I have an 1100 and I have shot #3 steel through it a few times a year for the past 5. It hasn't hurt anything yet, but I was told not to..

Remington used to say Modified or more open choke, #2 or smaller shot, going back to the 1950s guns, but I haven't looked in a long time. In fact I haven't shot steel in a long time. The new non-toxics work a lot better, and many of them can be safely shot thru anything.
