steel shot?

is is safe to shoot steel shot through my Stoger Uplander SxS 20 ga? I bought the gun used it can't be more than 5 years old.
I don't know the rules concerning where you need to use steel shot and really prefer lead shot but I live in Calif and some areas require steel.
