As they say speed kills!
Speed of the round and distance are the biggest factors.
Angle of impact is important (15-20 degrees).
Very heavy and fast round could use 1/2" AR500 + Distance
Thinner steel is louder steel, louder is more fun.
For 223/308/6.5 100yds 1/2", more for movement control than damage. But why at 100yds?
200yds, 300yds +3/8"
After about 400yds 1/4" will work for these rounds
If you have 22/250 or magnum rounds only go 300yds unless you put a steep angle on the plate, or you will get deeper pitting.
If you hang an AR500 plate at 100yds 223/308 might make a very small dimple, 7mm Mag may go through a 3/8 plate or atleast make a crater .
We never shoot rifles at steel less than 200yds as we also use them for pistols and craters are dangerous as the throw fragments back towards you
heavier plate make less noise with smaller bullets and just a thud on bigger bullets.
Factor into your budget a system to hang them like chain or fiber re-enforced rubber straps and hardened bolts.
I have several AR500 plate sizes in 3/8" we use from 200-400yds each has had hundred of round by us and others with little damage.
Several 3/16" AR400 we hang in 16" hooks to get maximum wiggle and ring from 22LR at 200yds.
Several of these in 3/8 & 3/16
