I see that Savage now has a couple of rifles chambered in 7.62x39. One is in the middle of the price range and the other is near the top. I would like to see a Stevens 200 chambered in 7.62x39. I think this would make a great rifle at the right price point.

Would anyone else like to see a 200 in 7.62x39? I know the Ruger and the CZ are great rifles, but they are priced fairly high.

Just wondering if any other 7.62x39 shooter would be interested too?

I have actually owned both the Ruger and the CZ and sold both; neither was quite what I was looking for. Strange as it may sound, a 200 would be just about perfect for what I need.

I would buy one. A large part of the 7.62x39's appeal is the fact that it is cheap. Buying a $1,000 rifle to shoot it defeats the purpose.

IMO to be successful a 7.62x39 bolt gun would have to cost less than the cheapest AK, and be more accurate too. The Stevens 200 would fit that bill.

I would be all over that. 5.45x39 would also be great.

It would seem logical that the same people who are looking for a budget rifle would be interested in a caliber that's easy on the wallet, and there's no centerfire rifle caliber that's cheaper to shoot than the Russian calibers.

I haven't done the numbers, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is cheaper to buy steel-cased 7.26x39 than it is to reload the brass--you can buy it all day for $0.30/round.

I cannot imagine what niche the 200 fills that the CZ or Ruger doesn't take care of. Please elaborate.

I sold a CZ in 7.62x39 but would consider a Stevens 200. The reason? A Stevens makes a much better "truck/beater" gun that you don't have to worry about babying. The CZ stock and finish are quite nice and I was always worried about beating them up. The CZ shot quite well, but I would far prefer to have a rifle that can serve as a ride around gun on an ATV.
Also, the CZ safety is backwards which is something I never really got used to.

A $250 Stevens in 7.62x39? Yeah, I would definitely consider it.

Check the price tags.

Yeah, roger that. But the fella had both the Ruger and the CZ in the gun safe already. What will a 200 do that a M77 won't? The Hawkeye Compact looks perfect to drag around brier patches and deer stands.

What I am looking for is an inexpensive, reliable rifle to use on ATV and leave be able to leave at my desert house without a major fear of theft. The CZ was really nice, but I hated the magazine sticking out of the bottom and the backwards safety. The Ruger was nice, but they are somewhat expensive for my needs. I think a 299 rifle would be a perfect match.

I have the CZ 527M 7.62x39mm carbine, a great little camp rifle, range gun. Wouldn't mind trying another rifle in that caliber, since I both load and cast for it.
Edit to add, I wanted to find a poly stock for my CZ rifle so I could carry another mag or two in it, ala escaper's rifle, but couldn't find one around. Does the Stevens have fixed/adjustable/no iron sights? I am not familiar with the brand, sorry.

Yeah, it would be. But Savage doesn't make it. So, one less thing to worry about.
