My Dad's old Stevens 16G side by side (model 311 I think from pics, but no model number on the gun) hasn't been cleaned in decades, except wiping the bores. I would like to take it all down and give the workings a good cleaning, as well as putting some finish on the wood.

Can anyone direct me to a source for a takedown manual or something similar? I know very little about shotguns and would hate to get halfway started and not know how to finish.

First, I am not an expert so take what I say with a large grain of salt. I am not afraid to take things apart - sometimes this gets me into trouble but I always seem to learn something in the process. I have a stevens 311 and this is what I do. First go to the Numrich website and get a parts diagram. This will give you a visual display of how every thing fits together. Next, remove the foreend and barrel. The metal is easily removed from the foreend, cleaned, oiled and reinstalled. The barrel parts are also easily removed, cleaned, oiled and reinstalled. Next remove the butt plate. Next get a long screw driver and remove the stock bolt. Slide the stock off the receiver. Now you have access to all the innards. At this point, I merely use Birchwood-Casey Gunscubber to spray the dirt off all the parts in the receiver. I then oil all the parts and wipe it down. I then tip the reciever up one direction for about 12 hours and then flip it 180 degrees for another 12 hours to allow excess oil to drain off. I wipe it down intermittently while it is draining. I then reassemble. If parts were found to be rusty, then a more aggressive cleaning would be warranted but hopefully you won't find any rust. I think this approach will clean it pretty well. I have not been able to find a book or website explaining how to take down and maintain a stevens 311. However, I would love to find one if it exists. Good luck!

I'm still lurking around here and there

Steve has it about right (stevehaun, not old steve:neener: ) I've taken one completely apart to replace the firing pins and springs. I'll never make that mistake again.:banghead: . Got it back together and it runs like new now, but I still have nightmares. Detal picks, q-tips and canned air go a long way toward making cleaning easier. Anything more complex than that and it's probably worth the money to have a smith and all his tools do it.

Thanks, I think. I don't intend to take the little bits apart, don't have the tools for one thing. I found the stock screw easily enough, now to find a tool long enough to unscrew it... My Dad is an old farmer, he probably has a long-barreled screw driver around somewhere.

How does the fore-end come off?

Just pull down. Really. Give it a try. Hate doing things like that without knowing what I am doing, tend to break things that way.

Thanks!

Post a pic please

Call me crazy, but I have a fondness for these old 16 Gauge side-by-sides. Please post a pic after you get it cleaned up.
