Picked up an old Stevens Ranger 520 yesterday and noticed something strange. When I was loading up the magazine I noticed that the shells don't stay in the magazine and partially go into the receiver. It cycles fine, but I was sure if there is supposed to be a shell latch that holds the rounds in the magazine until it's cycles. Here's a pic of what I'm talking about.

Thanks
Adam

Looks about right to me... remember, this is a JMB design dating from 1903, it isn't exactly modern. :D In fact it's only 10 years newer than the Winchester 1893, the basic design which evolved into the Winchester 1897, another Browning patent. The 1893/1897 was pretty much the third well known pumpgun design in the USA, following the Spencer (1882) and the Burgess.

One thing I have noticed with my wifes 520, is that the shell catch only works with the bolt open. When the bolt is closed, it is pushed down so that it cannot contact the rim of the shell.
