Well in the middle of restoring a Stevens 520A model shotgun. It was my great grandfather's, and my grandpa tasked me with refinishing all of it as it was very well used and he wants to be able to show it off. Have the metal refinishing taken care of but now I'm down to my final problem: the buttstock.

Near the grip area it is riddled with cracks and missing pieces and is pretty much useless as is, but the rest of the stock is solid. I'm wondering if anyone knows what the old stevens buttstocks were made out of wood-wise and if it was anything special. I'm almost positive it is walnut. Pretty much I'm hoping I can remove the bad area on the grip, and simply cut a replacement piece and dowel it onto the original for a cheap fix that does not make me have to buy a whole new replacement buttstock, as the original has some very nice wood etching on it that would be difficult to duplicate. I have done this on other stocks and was very pleased with the results.

Just want to make sure there isn't anything goofy going on with it before I attempt a repair and run into a nasty surprise.
