Steyr M-A1

I just recently picked up one of the Steyr M9-A1 guns from CDNN...

It feels better in the hand than anything else that I've ever held (and I've held a lot of stuff :))...

Although I have pretty big hands, the M9-A1 is suitable for much smaller handed people too.

The guns are beautifully made. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to wring it out completely yet, but a short session produced no surprises (and no failures of any kind, and a grin on my face)...

The triangle/trapezoid sights take some getting used to for someone used to the standard three dot sight picture, but I think that I'll be able to handle it. I also have a Taurus PT 24/7 PRO with the 'straight eight' sights, which I loathe... The Steyr ones will be ok...

CDNN has them available for a very reasonable price right now. Just make sure that you pick up the mags that you may need now and don't wait until the future (when the M9-A1 mags may have disappeared).

Try one of the Steyr M9-A1s...

I think that you'll like it.

i have an ma1 40 and love it. i can't say enough great things about in comparison to the xd 9 i traded in for it. accurate, reliable, very controllable recoil, comfortable and i much prefer the trigger pull. i bought from a local shop b/c CDNN will not ship to Cali but had no problem paying a bit more for what i got in return.

I have the older model, M9, and love it. At first I was leaning toward the Walther P99 as being one of the most ergonomically designed handguns that I have ever handled. Then I tried the M9. Even better-felt like putting your hand in a perfectly form fitted glove. And the icing on the cake-the sights and the manual safety, although that feature was not carried over to the new model. Add in a decent SA trigger and I think it's a winner all the way around.

The Steyr pistols are the sleeper pistols at $350 NIB. Come and join the steyr club and you will meet tons of people who love these pistols. I like the trap sights that come with the pistol, but I wanted to have NS on it because I carry my M40. I had PT NS installed and like the upgrade, but I wished that trap NS were offered. I don't think you would be disappointed if you purchased the MxxA1 series from CDNN.

I just bought one last week after my wife saw it in the gun case, held it, liked it, etc. Took it to the range and it jammed 7 times out of 100 rounds. At first I thought she was limp-wristing, etc. But it jammed on me too. Looked like the spent case was half way out of the chamber and a new round was half way out of the magazine with the nose of the bullet against the spent cartridge. I don't know what to do other than call Steyr and ship it to them. Any suggestions?? Seemed to jam on both mags.

I would suggest that you go to steyr club and see if their U.S. branch is open, the reason why they sold ALL of their inventory to cdnn is that they were sold and not really in buisness right now.

Follow up...been using factory loads and not so much as a single hiccup. Seems that the reloads at the range were not hot enough or something. Getting realllllllly fond of this pistol now! What a gun!

Mine's the best!!! Yours will be too.

I got mine about three months ago, from CDNN. So far, have put three hundred rounds through it, 100 WWB FMJ, 50 WWB JHP, 50 CCI Blaser brass FMJ, and the rest Remington JHP. Not one Hiccup, ftf, or fte. Dead solid reliable, and the recoil is half that of my Hi-point, even at half the weight. Both are in .40 S&w.
I have huge hands, when my hand is fully extended, from the tip of the little finger to the tip of the thumb, it measures 9 inches exactly. From my wrist to the tip of my middle finger, is also 9 inches. The steyr fits in my hand like it was patterned just for me.
As for the sights, once you use traps, you never like anything else. They seem to combine the quick acquisition of a ghost ring style with the accuracy of a three dot. I know this is far from an objective result, but at 8 yards, I can put all 13 rounds into the chest area of a standard torso target, as fast as I can pull the trigger. At 25 yards, I can put all 13 into an eight inch circle, from a standing offhand position, just not as fast.
Disassembly is the easiest of any handgun I have ever owned, although it does require you to pull the trigger to remove the slide.
The only other guns I have ever found that fit my hand like this are the 1911, and the cz-40, which mated a 1911 frame and grip angle to a .40 cz-75 upper. Bizarre looking, but felt almost as good as the steyr ma-1.

I don't own one, but I have put ALOT of rounds through the 9mm & 357 sig versions. I like the pistol...it has a nicer trigger than I was expecting, the ergos are really good and it is very accurate. My only complaint are those sights -- not a fan of those

What happened to these pistols? They are nice handling and almost like a Glock but it seems they are not picking up in the sales department.

Mine handles well and shoots consistently. Feels good in the hand. The sightes take a little adjusting to get used to. The only real downside I have found is racking the first round in by hand with a full mag, very tight.

M40 A1 owner here... I buy, try and trade firearms often.. I have no plans to part with this one :)

Oh crap, I drove six hours to gun shop yesterday saw one of these in 9mm for $800(CND) did not know anything about it and wanted to get home to talk to you guys. Sounds like I should have bought it. I will know have to get it mailed to me. It felt great and I like the trap sights.

I have the M40A1. Reliable, accurate, and comfortable. Also quite unique looking. I use CCI brass a lot, Hydrashocks and Cor-Bon.

Prefer it to similar Glocks and XDs. I owned an XD- was a reliable and accurate pistol, just not very comfortable for me.

I have an older M40 that I purchased from CDNN some years back. It is an extremely well-made gun and surprisingly accurate to boot. Those funky triangular sights actually make for easier and quicker target acquisition.

My only complaint is that the stock recoil spring is very weak, and there doesn't appear to be any stronger aftermarket ones available.

So what of them no longer being in business. I have only heard of that here, anyone know this for sure? Canadian suppliers say they are still functioning. Could be wrong though. I want one but just want to make sure I can get parts if need be.

I own an M9A1 and an M40A1 (and an M9 and S9 and GB) and find them to be incredible handguns. I've not experienced a malfunction with either and with the M9A1 I was shooting 3.5 to 4.25 inch groups at 30 yards without even really trying right from the start. I'm betting I can cut that in half. The recoil and muzzle flip is negligible. Ergonomically they fit my hand like a glove. The trap sights are taking some time for me to get used to, but I'm liking them. I only wish I had one in .357 Sig and will buy the new SA1 in that caliber when they become available. Their customer service, located just up the road from me in Cumming Georgia, is outstanding. Steyr is going through a re-org right now with a new owner but they promise an even stronger presence in the US market. to date they have only made half-hearted efforts in the US.

Also, if you pick up an M40/M40A1 know that this gun was built around the .40S&W rather than an existing gun adopting the caliber. Issues such as unsupported barrels are non-existant. The .40 is pretty darn tame from the Steyr, although I don't have a problem with the .40 as it is.

Do stop by the Steyr Club forum.

I like them so much I keep buying them, I have an S9, M40, M9-A1 and an M40-A1.
