Where Am I?
Hello, all.

(I posted this question in "Gunsmithing" but it hasn't garnered any responses, so I though I'd post it in a forum with heavier traffic.)

Does anyone know how to remove the extractor on a Steyr M40 pistol? I am sending the slide in for a refinish, and need to completely disassemble it first. Everything else on the slide came apart easily, but the extractor has thus far resisted any and all attempts at removal.

Thanks in advance.

refer to pages 26,27 and 30,31.
grab a small flathead screwdriver worm it between the extractor and extractor spring guide part #40 and #39. push the spring guide toward rear of slide eventually it will untrap the extractor releasing it.

Of the manual?

I have one of the older manuals I guess ... all it tells you is how to field strip it for cleaning and then gives you a stern warning that "further disassembly should only be performed by a professional gunsmith and may void warranty"

I gotta pick up a newer manual

yes of the manual. basicly its parts list page and diagram page in back of manual.

if I knew where pdf form of manual was I would refer to it. I have 2 steyr m40's and manual is same though both are fairly close serial numbers.

sections 18 and 20 are same as
pages 26,27 30,31

no they dont have instructions for it.
call diamond trail shooter supply for help if you dont think you can do it yourself or take it to a competent gunsmith not that he will be able to do much without manual and parts diagram. I would be suprised if a gunsmith new what to do as steyr pistols are not in any manual I have seen for gunsmiths. glocks are similar but not the same.

unless you live in austria or near steyr factory repair shop.
I happen to live within 100miles of diamond trail shooter supply which is usa repair center and home of usasteyr.com

mrapathy2000,

Thank you for the directions! I did as you suggested and the extractor fell right out.

np, when your M40 gets refinished post a picture.

getting some magazines and a kel-tec p11 refinished myself. parkerized then coated with teflon/moly bake on finish. if it turns out good might put it on my steyrs.

Will do. Thanks again!

Believe it or not, the Steyr is actually brand new. I got it from an online dealer just last week and have brought it to the range only once. I am having it refinished because, right out of the box, I noticed that the blueing on some of the high spots and corners of the slide had worn away, revealing some sort of greyish undercoating. The worn spots are actually quite small, but I am anal about having flawless finishes on my firearms. The M40 will be sent to the refinisher together with the slide from my SA 1911 Mil-Spec.

By the way, the one thing I noticed when I shot the M40 was that the pistol was severely undersprung. Are there any aftermarket recoil springs and non-captive guide rods available for the M40? I've looked at the usual sources (Wolff, for one) and none seem to be available.

Thanks again.
